The first time I watched I was frustrated too but after I understood Subaru's feelings, since the first ep he fell in love with Emilia, it would not be right and truthfull if he accepted Rem's love, but it doesn't change the fact that he loves Rem almost on the same level as Emilia, she is one of the most important people in his life and he needs someone like her in this world to keep himself sane

I think people get confused here, I was too. That Subaru isn't reciprocating her feelings NOW doesn't mean he doesn't love Rem. He is extremely greedy and loves both Emilia and Rem. And as you said at the end, Rem wants the Subaru who loves Emilia to love her too.

I understand the opinion that rem has done more for subaru than emilia has, but let’s not pretend emilia hasn’t done anything for him either. I feel like people cater towards rem bc she’s been a focus and Emilia’s been out of the picture for the most part. Either way I feel the main point of this episode wasn’t about subaru choosing rem or emilia, it was about subaru acknowledging and expressing his self hatred that’s been building inside of him for so long, and about how rem brought him out of this hole. He still hates himself, but now that he knows rem loves him and he’s her hero, he won’t give up and will push forward. Also u guys already pretty much got the gist of it, but rem loves the Subaru that loves Emilia.

Also you are correct, according to the novel - rem confessed to subaru knowing he loves emilia. Subaru asking rem to run away with him was a desperate escape from reality, it's not what subaru REALLY wanted. Although he should have chosen her......... it sucks. I get it though... you are not obligated to love someone back just because they love you.... but as a viewer, rem has done so much for him she deserves the love... its frustrating!

First time watching this, I was only focused on subaru's development because he was going through a lot. Especially for a kid who did nothing but slack off in his previous life, to give so much effort for something and someone, to just experience some gruesome deaths over and over. It may seem like an OP power to just never die, but remember that he still feels pain and experience some psychological torture. It sucks that he didn't choose rem, but it was never about loving rem or loving emilia for me. To me, it was about subaru loving himself back.

You can't help the fact that you love somebody. Subaru loves Emilia, almost to the point of obsession at times. It's what keeps him from going totally insane, having someone or something to latch onto. There's also the fact that Rem has killed him, more than once, and also tortured him. If someone told you to just stop loving the person you love, and instead love another person they feel is better for you, would you just give up on your love and just settle for this other person? I've also been in Rem's situation some times, only the loving somebody but needing to cheer them up and push them towards who they love part. If you truly love someone, making them happy will also make you happy, even if it is bittersweet at the moment.

Definitely understand how you guys feel with this episode. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that Subaru heard all of that from Rem and still finds Emilia to be the better choice. But Ron talking himself through why Rem rejected Subaru at first was really smart. Emilia doesn’t really get time to shine this season. Rem is an obvious shoe-in for best girl because she’s the only girl in season one that does anything or has any development. I hope you guys stick with the show despite your feelings towards Subaru currently, because the show does stay interesting, and will start giving you a bigger picture of the world very soon

I also was very frustrated with Subaru, but, after thinking about it I have come to respect his decision. I'd rather him be true to his heart rather lie to Rem and end up turning back to Emilia. I think he did the right thing by being honest from the start and not leading Rem on just to make her happy yet not truly loving her the same level he does Emilia.

I completely understand your guys' reaction to Subaru not choosing Rem, but I think the harsh reality is that he fell in love with Emilia before ever getting to know Rem and because his feelings for Emilia are very real, he did the right thing by telling Rem the truth. You guys are right to think that she would not be happy being with the Subaru who gave up.

Emilia has been with dude since day one. That's who he fell for. You don't give up on who you love if someone else catches feelings for you, and Rem knows it. She's disappointed she can't be with him, but also knows that the Subaru she loves is the Subaru who is devoted to Emilia.

I watched the first season of re zero years ago and my opinion about episode 18 didnt change a bit. Every single man on the planet with a working head on his shoulders would have chosen rem over emilia. Its not like emilia doesnt have the same qualities as rem, its just the amount of time subaru spent with rem and the bond they forged, outweighs everything he did with emilia. Just imagine who was Subarus mental fundamental all the time? Who supported him after he became insane? Who literally died for him ? Who believes in him when nobody does? It absolutely confuses me how subaru can not fall in love with rem, its literally unreasonable and the worst part in the whole story, because it doesnt make sense. Also, saying rem only loves the version of subaru where he never gives up and loves emilia so he is "not allowed" to give up on her, is bullcrap. Its not like Subaru would give up on Emilia, he just choses Rem over her. I am very sure if Subaru kept his mentallity of never giving up after he comes together with Rem, she would obviously love him, because thats exactly the Subaru she fell in love with. To be fair, i would still try to somehow achiev a future where i safe everyone and not just run away with rem(Crazy to me how strong her devotion for subaru is, just leaving her sister behind), but in the end i would 100% chose rem.

The whole premise of him being with Rem is him giving up, moving far away and living a tiny insignificant life out in the middle of nowhere. He's treating her as an escape, a second option which is unfair to him and Rem. Everyone puts themselves in Subaru's shoes, but think about how Rem feels. Imagine a girl you like tells you "Yeah so the guy I love might be harder to get than I thought, so I thought I'd settle for you, since you like me you're cool with that right?" I like to learn about psychology and human behavior, in fact I study it. I also like knowing what can cause suffering and how one can grow in order to have better mental health. I like this show because it is pretty realistic in term of mental health state in human beings. Usually MCs are too perfect and can solve any problem just like that, it isn't like that in real life. I really enjoy this show for what it shows to people, showing those who suffer that they're not alone and that they can be understood, showing them that they can get better by asking help. We're not all the same and it doesn't make anyone an idiot to like something more than something else I understand both choice but imo Rem is a weak and frail girl who just got "over" her trauma, being in love with someone and doing anything for him isn't actually healthy, I don't think one that experienced true love would think that it is. Rem isn't her own individual and you can't fall in love for someone that isn't herself, all she does is help and care for subaru. If you fall in love for rem you fall in love of her actions, not her. I'm surprised that Ron was able to understand what the author is trying to convey in this episode, I'm proud of you Ron! At the end when you said that "its almost as if Rem is in love with Subaru because Subaru is not in love with her" and "Rem knew that if she accepted his proposal, that wouldn't be the real Subaru that she fell in love with", Subaru realized that at the moment too, which was why he said "I love Emilia" and got back on track on what he was supposed to do in the first place instead of giving up and running away with Rem. I know it sucks to see this, I'm team Rem too, but hopefully you guys see that its Rem who chose this, and not Subaru. If it makes you feel better, in the official light novel, it is indicated that Subaru loves Rem too. Also, if you are interested, the author made a story about what would have happened if Subaru made certain important choices that are different from the main story. It is called Re:Zero If stories and every story corresponds to a sin. This would be the "Sloth" route if Subaru decides to give up and run away with Rem.

ReZero in some ways helped save my life, I resonate with pretty much everything Subaru says in this episode. I've spent 9 years in 3 long-term relationships, 1.5 years, 4.5 years and the most recent being 3 years that ended last year. I believed my last ex to be my "Rem", until like the other 2 in the last month of dating she changed her whole personality, cheated and I ended it. I think characters like Rem have ruined me though, makes me feel like I want someone who could look at me that way, my most recent ex genuinely did for 3 years then changed, but as I'm getting older (I'm mid-20s now) I just doubt I'd ever find that kind of person anymore. At least I got the animoo's to keep me company I guess... LUL

Michelle I felt the same exact way you did. And Ngl I stopped watching the show completely after this and ik it’s bad it’s just mad me hella sad bc of how much rem has done for Subaru and just how much love she has for him. And watching her pour out all her feelings for him, like how could you not fall in love. I also know that Emilia was the first person to help him and was his first choice but I still feel so bad for rem. It’s prolly bc of how much romance anime’s I’ve watched where the best girl doesn’t get the guy and just kills me. In Subaru's defense: He met Emilia first, He's loyal to Emilia, Emilia is nice to everyone and selfless even to a complete stranger she just met, even to someone that was being mean to her, she stop and saved Subaru in the beginning even after someone just stole her insignia(The thing that qualify her thrown candidate), she heals Subaru fatal injuries many times even after they just had a broke up argument, that's what Subaru love about Emilia. Rem is also nice but mostly towards Subaru, she killed Subaru twice after they met before he gain her trust and finally fell in love with him, it's not that he doesn't love Rem after the thing she done for him, it's just that she's second place in his heart, heck he broken down many times after seeing her death, that just shows how much he really cared about Rem.

Rem has recieved so much love and care from Subaru in all the lives he has spent. He has died for her too on multiple occations, to say Rem doesn't recieve love is quite and understatement. Its easy to feel that Rem and Subaru should be together after everything. But one doesn't simply start loving someone else completely. They would leave behind the Subaru she loves most. Even after that whole ordeal Subaru could only think about Emilia. Rem only wanted to help Subaru after he helped her. Emilia is more selfless and helps anyone who needs help, even Subaru, she has saved Subaru many times. So its a tough choice for Subaru to make since it was probably tearing at his heart. But in my opinion it was the right choice. The fact that this episode has so big of am emotional impact makes it so amazing of an episode and done its job perfectly. Re Zero isn't a slice of life romance anime.

Rem best girl, but I feel like it wouldn't have been fair to her if he just switched his love interest just because she loves him that much. Subaru loves Emilia . It has been that from the start. Also she helped him, saved his live multiple times by healing him, comforted him etc. So it isn't fair to say Subaru loves her just because of him being superficial. To be fair it feels painful to witness a confession as perfect as Rems and the rejection, but I think for him it was the right choice. Rem wanted him to not run away and that included him staying the hardliner he is. Which is part of what Rem loves about him. No doubt she is incredibly important to him, but his main love interest is and stays Emilia. She is the reason Subaru even started being like this and found a purpose in this world. Just my two cents.

I'm not going to rehash Emilia or Rem's good qualities since others have already done it. I will say this: Emilia makes Subaru a better person. Or rather, Subaru's love for Emilia makes him a better person. Everything he has done on that world has stemmed from his desire to be better/"good enough" for Emilia and that is the person that Rem is in love with. Choosing Rem isn't so much settling as it is running AWAY from all that pain that comes from growing as a person. Choosing Emilia is running TOWARD who he is becoming, the slacker who can evolve beyond all those limits he set on himself when he was in "our world"

The writing of this story is just....I wonder if the author hates subaru, i understand how painful he is and he should be ,but sometimes it's just overdone, not really logical and makes him looks like a clown tbh. And u may say he is still a teenager, this is normal, maybe it is, but this is not really necessary. Such as breaking the deal with Emilia ,went to the ceremony and acted like a clown in front of everyone, and that break up with Emilia, so many stupid shit was said, did I understand how he feels? Ofc. but he still looks like a clown to me and make me feels sick sometimes, he really deserves those results. And this episode, he wanted to run away with Rem at first but he still rejected her at the end, some of his actions and decisions is so confusing and not logical. I understand him, I would say subaru is a realistic charactor , but really not a good one for me. And the author makes us feel it in that way, it looks like he tried so hard to make us feel the realest emotion of desperate and broken, it did looks hysterical but not in a proper way. Anyways, I still have to say the story itself is really attractive, just focus on the storyline and this show would be fine.

Personally wish Subaru chose Rem, but totally agree with her reasoning and why others feel how they do. Even though we follow Subaru, we don’t truly get his lived perspective. The thing about the scene at the capital in the castle is that at that moment Subaru still had in mine that this is a game/a fantasy world where HE is the MC and so he has a big part to play in or whatever. He had yet to realize that he is just a random, maybe even less than that, in a world with people with far more impact and power than him, and with dangers that he cannot face with his normal human strenght. He took all of this as a game instead of seeing this world seriously. He acted like a big shot in a huge ceremony where he did not have his place at all.

So, this is just my own thoughts on the matter, of course, but I think the reason Rem doesn't just run away with Subaru is because it would be a life and relationship built on a lie. She is fully aware that she will never be able to become number one in his mind and so instead of start something fake that they both will regret for the rest of their lives, she opts to help him get what both of them know he wants for real. Which is strong-willed of her and absolutely the right choice to make, at least in my opinion.

In this episode literally every single Rem fan ignore that she literally has killed and tortured Subaru twice in his life redo's. Emilia has never done anything to Subaru in any of his lifetimes, so it's no wonder she is still his number 1 girl. Another thing in episode 18 that I have understood is that in the novel he says that he loves Rem, but his choice is Emilia. So he confesses to Rem that he does love her, but he wants to go to Emilia. Even males have the right to choose who they want, if this was reversed Rem was the one suffering like Subaru nobody would be raging in this episode 18 like this, hypocrisy always maxed out in people. Anyway for me personally I ship harem route Subaru should just get both Rem & Emilia end of this full story is my route.

You said it well, and so many always forget Rem has literally killed him twice (well Ram finished him off in forest). Other point is that what Rem knows is only the lifetime where Subaru saved him, but Subaru actually has lived other lifetimes where Rem has killed & tortured him. Anime fails where in Novel I have understood he admits loving Rem, but Emilia was first. It's his choice is always my opinion.

Exactly my thoughts. While Rem's character development is admirable, fact remains that she killed him mercilessly in his previous life. IMO even if it was a misunderstanding, ending up being friends with Rem is already more than she can ask for (if only she knew what she did but she won't of course). Emilia on the other hand helped Subaru at the cost of (almost) losing the item stole by Felt. Not only that, she helped him knowingly or unknowingly countless times too. I somehow respect Subaru for still choosing Emilia after everything Rem said. It just shows his feelings towards Emilia is the real deal. It wouldn't feel right if he suddenly switched to Rem at this point as he's basically treating her as a rebound (he almost did). Your "harem" take is good and interesting though. I approve. lol

Well I do not want to compare Rem and Emilia but to be fair, regarding of the 'love' here, you do not have to love someone just because he/she loves you, that is your own choice to choose, even the reason might seems to be childish to others. To love someone is not to compare who treats you better and could do more for you.

I think that from Subaru's lonely, former shut-in perspective, he comes across as desperate for romance (initially); his over-the-top flirting with Emilia acts as a singular output for these pent up feelings. I think choosing Emilia either shows great personal development for Subaru. He disregards his former wanting of romantic status, gestures, and actions in favor of choosing the right person which should be respected. It's also loyal to see things through with Emilia regardless, when he's presented with everything his former, "greedy" self wanted. Lastly, I don't think Rem would have wanted to be chosen as a desperate escapism and still intends to vie for his affection, like when she sees even Patrasche as a romantic rival. Anyways Rem is cool

I mean if I see a girl liberally dangling huge sums of money around I assume she's best girl. Emilia looks richer than Rem but we never see her do that. Subaru needs a wifey who can set him up with cash in this new world, then he can go back to slothing inside his room all day

I agree that Rem is best girl and deserves to be loved but I personally believe that just because someone loves you doesn't mean you have to love them back. I don't get why Subaru is so obsessed with Emilia but Subaru should choose who he wants to be with. It's his feelings and he can't just rewrite his feelings on his own just because someone showed a love probably second to none. If he decided to just choose Rem even though his feelings towards her didn't change during that speech, Then it'll only be just because he felt obliged and Rem doesn't deserve that. Subaru's response was cruel but at least it's the truth. It's his choice and he should actually be given credit for being honest and following his heart than choosing what's the most convenient choice.

It's not Subaru rejecting Rem that is the problem. It is the way (!) he does it. It is the way he acts and behaves in general the past couple of episodes. It is so out of place and annoying. He could have "rejected" Rem in a way better, loving and respectful way. I might be a little judgy here, haha. But it is frustrating as hell.

You already saw the second season and you know why Subaru loves Emilia. Their fate was to be together from the start since episode one since u saw another Subaru dying. It doesn't matter how manny women like him cuz he will always love Emilia. They are predestinated to be together. Is like a law of the universe that must happen. All the other girls are side characters in his love story . And is not like you couldn't see it coming. He liked he from the start and he won't change just because you the viewer want it. I know Rem saw that too. Behind the running part she knew that no matter if they would be together or not Subaru will still love Emilia more. That's why she rejected his offer since it wasn't true love for her. Plus for some reason she loves more the Subaru that Loves Emilia then the Subaru that Loves her. She said it too.. She doesn't want live this Subaru behind. The Subaru that loves Emilia cuz this Subaru is her hero despite being the Subaru who doesn't love her. He care's for her as a sister but no more then that. Plus ppl hate on Subaru but he liked Emilia from the start and he was faithful to that choice. Just because someone likes u doesn't mean you should like them back. How would you feel as a person knowing you dedicated your love to someone and then someone that you ain't interested in , comes and declare their love for you. It would not be your fault for rejecting them knowing that you love someone else. Cuz in your eyes the person who you start to love from the start and try to be with is the most important person for you. Now imagine that someone from outside comes and judge you based on your choice. Don't listen to them. Is your choice not theirs to make. I think everyone should follow their heart. You don't have to accept someone love just cuz they declare it. If they are not the person you seek you're not obligated to accept anything. You can decline them politely and move on to your true love. Is so stupid to hate on Subaru when he clearly stated from episode one he loves Emilia. Just because someone cute and nice appear in the background doesn't mean Subaru is force to love her. He's faithful to his first one true love and Rem got that but most of the people watching didn't.
