There are three forms of writing in Japanese. There are disputes as to whether and how hiragana and katakana were derived or otherwise "borrowed" from Chinese but kanji (literally Han + script/characters) is what is still recognizable as full Chinese characters (same/similar to Hanja in Korean writing). Without making this post even longer than it already is, hiragana and katakana are both syllabaries, which means there are a specific number of symbols that each represent a syllable in the language. Kanji/Chinese characters do not work this way, which is why you will sometimes see hiragana written next to Kanji so kids can understand how to pronounce the kanji word. On the banner, only 飛 is in kanji, the second word is in hiragana.

So the thing with the writing, Japanese has different types in the writing, and the most complicated ones called Kanji have the same script or characters as Chinese. So the letter can look the same to a Chinese and a Japanese, but they would read it differently.

Regarding the "Fly" banner y'all were talking about, it's the japanese word for fly (meaning to jump/fly not like a bird flies). It's a Japanese Kanji followed by a Hiragana alphabet symbol for the syllable "be". You pronounce this conjugation of the word Tobu as Tobe (toe-beh). What Michelle was talking about I think is that the Kanji that are used in Japanese are actually from Chinese but in Japanese the pronunciation of kanji changes depending on if they have another kanji before or after them (I forget which). So they all have japanese and chinese pronunciations. At least I think. I'm not that far into learning japanese, still at only moderate proficiency.

Really love that since the word for fly that they use in the series is Tobu/Tobe when they say "Let's show everyone in this stadium we Crows can fly" they're also saying "Let's show everyone in this stadium we Crows can jump" the double meaning also hits me watching this show with all the big jumps and all.

Benny

Honestly ive always seen midnight blue/navy blue more than black on their jerseys, but its like how Ron said, its pretty much supposed to be the color of the crows/ravens

Clement

Pls 2 episode 1 is not enough 😭😭😭 I finish all 4 season want u to be crazy watching this show 😱🤣 is not start really more u will see more u will be karasuno ty sushii squad!

Clement

NAID

I cant wait for fly high 😂😂

vee

now that Michelle mentions it I think it is navy blue, why was I always under the impression it was black, we're all colour blind😭

Ana Ignat

Thank you for this week's Haikyuu reaction marathon! I know it has been hard to react for so many hours in a day and look "fresh" for each content...The Karasuno team members do have all the same designed outside shoes as part of their team uniform but during a game, members work with their own "lucky" or comfortable shoes and this is accepted as long as it respects the rules from the National Volleyball Association. The official goods uniforms sold in Japan are in navy (a dark blue) and orange. This anime will be on your recommendation list for others for years to come😊 From here on the power of the duo Hinata (hina=sun, light) and Kageyama (kage= shadow) will be unleashed😍

storm (kasey) !

omg i didnt have the money for my sub until now and yall are so FAR!! ive got a good little binge ahead of me now that im back hehe

Jahmilla

the color dispute cracked me up

To make the post longer than it is, if interested in extra details - first, adding hiragana next to kanji is called "furigana" and usually appears in tiny script above the kanji character itself. This is separate from syllabic characters *following* the kanji, which are always simply continuations of the word. Second, kanji characters are usually used to represent a concept in its base form. As a result, one kanji character can have dozens of different pronunciations. So, the kanji 飛 here is the idea of flight. In the word shown, 飛ベ pronounced "to-be", it is the "to" part. However, in other words, it is not necessarily pronounced "to". For instance, airplane, (飛行機) uses the same 飛 character as its first character, but is pronounced "hi-kou-ki", 飛 as the "hi" part. Knowing when the kanji are read a certain way is part of learning the language but largely, you can remember there are at least 2 - the form used in combination with other kanji characters (for 飛, this is "hi") and the form used when flanked by only hiragana and katakana (for 飛, this is "to"). It's more complex than that but it's true in 70-80% of cases. Then, for the Karasuno slogan 飛ベ, the remaining ベ is hiragana, and is what turns the "idea" of flight into a command to fly - it's a conjugation. Anyways, since Ron was thinking of tattooing this on himself I thought more info might be nice to have. At this rate in 2030 he's going to be a walking anime reference billboard. As a side note about furigana, sometimes, Japanese will use a similar notation to give something written an explicit double meaning. If you ever watch fantasy shows that incorporate gaming terminology, you will see this appear a lot. For those in the know, this happens a lot in Tensura. One skill, "暴食者" (Pronounced "Boushokumono" meaning "One who is Gluttonous") is always written with a small "グラトニー " in Katakana above it - indicating to the Japanese audience that it should be pronounced "Guratonii" or, Gluttony. So, the characters can refer to the skill as "Gluttony" in English, but Japanese audiences who don't know the English word can have an understanding of what it actually means.

mainly because they are Crows so it's natural to think black, but they look sometimes blueish not gonna lie.

I also notice the uniform was kind of a dark blue, Orange and that white line. Also is it Just me or Oikawa gives the same vibe as Gojo Satoru?
