I'm SO glad to watch this again along with you guys! It's such a great show! Yes, it diverts from the manga, but it does it's own plotline justice, and has stellar fights to go alongside it. Nishio and his sister were born ghouls. You can assume they had to start hunting humans themselves to eat after they lost their parents. His sister was betrayed by her lover who was a human. So he doesn't trust anyone especially humans and also hates them since his sister died because of her human lover who reported her. I think that's why he had such a change of character. And after Nishio got injured by Kaneki, it was Kimi who stayed and was willing to give her life to Nishio that made him realize that there was someone he could trust.

It’ll get a lot more confusing after S1 and the anime is definitely inferior to the manga, but still an enjoyable story and imo well worth watching.
