So some have asked about how I do my shading so here is some stuff I try to think about when I do it. Im not prefect at this just the heads up that im still learning too

So the basics,

You got your light source

The Highlight is where the light source hits the object the most and the brightest spot is kind of like a reflection of that light source

The halftone is basically the main color of your object

The core shadow is just the main shadow, how soft or hard the transition from light to dark varies depending on the object

The reflective highlight is when you had an object close to another, like a table, and the light reflects off that table on to another object. this highlight is usually darker then the half tone but looks bright cuz its surrounded by darkness

lastly the cast shadow which is pretty self explanatory

So you have your pic all drawn and its time to shade

Now the first thing you want to do is figure out where you want your light to be coming from. like so. The light source in this pic is coming from the same direction as the viewer but up above. so its aimed down at an angle

Now what you also want to do is try to think of your objects as 3D things. It can be hard to visualize, I know I still struggle with it. So here is the pic again with some cross couture lines to help show the 3D forms and plane changes

See every thing is made up plane changes and as those planes start facing more and more away from the light the darker they become

here is a box with 3 different light sources to give you an idea of what im talking about

So knowing where the light is coming from and where the planes start pointing away from the light you can start putting in your shadows

so yeah thats pretty much the basics of how I do shading, well at least the logic behind what I do. I also take some artistic license here and there but I still try my best to follow what shadows and light actually do

if you have any questions feel free to ask and maybe I will update this with more info is needed

oh also the pic used in this example is one of this month's BW patreon pics they said I could use it for this tutorial
