Part Cooling and Customer Strategy with Andy of Hero Me!! - Making Awesome S2E37

This week we are joined by Andrew Soderberg of the well known Hero Me part cooling solution. We are going to be talking all about the history of Hero Me, the iterations, the design process and so much more. Also, expect some @Wham Bam Systems Mutant talk as well! Andy has an EXTENSIVE background, here is his bio from the 3D Printing Industry: 3D Printing Bio Until recently as a hobby I have been designing 3D printer upgrade components for the past nine years. Commercial design work includes the Wham Bam MUTANT V2 Mobile plate, and since the fall of 2018, I am the designer and curator of the Hero Me Gen series of extruder/hot-end cooling systems for many popular consumer 3D printers. A little about my 3D printing cred. My first 3D printers were Kickstarter projects, the M3D Micro in 2014, and then the Tiko 3D Delta printer. My next acquisitions were the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus and a Creality CR-10 and now have three Ender 3 V2s, an Ender 5 Plus, TwoTrees Sapphire Pro, Monoprice i3 Mini (Wanhao), the Elegoo Mars and Beam3D Prism (also a Kickstarter), and most recently 4 Prusa MK3s+ printers. From my experience with these printers I have found that while the printers worked, most of them did not perform to their potential. Like most makers I began tinkering with the printers to see how they could be improved. I have done major upgrade 'surgery' to most of my printers to improve their performance, quality and reliability. Everything from controller upgrades, firmware edits, linear rails, gantry upgrades, and most specifically working to improve on the very poor quality stock part cooling that most 3D manufacturers ship with their printers. Part cooling has been an after-thought by almost all manufacturers, a check box to tick to show that they have this feature. Practically no design work has been done to properly provide effective part cooling when needed. Thus my journey that is now 6 generations of the Hero Me part cooling system, and in collaboration with Craig West of Toronto Canada, the part cooling duct designs have all been CFD tested to create an efficient laminar flow of air at the base of the nozzle to quickly cool the filament as it is deposited. Having invested several thousand hours of design time on the Hero Me system and hundreds of hours answering over 3,000 questions from makers over the past 4 year, I needed a way to fund these efforts. In January I setup a Patreon account to provide a way for people to help support my efforts to keep the Hero Me suite updated as new printers and components come available on the market. All the Hero Me design files (STLs) are and will remain open source and available on the popular STL libraries. The Patreon page and Discord server are where I provide detailed parts cross references and illustrated assembly guides and videos, along with direct support. This is basically the Linux/RetHat model. The Linux OS is free and open source, but if you want great documentation and technical support, you subscribe to Red Hat for those services. I have to say that the response over the past 4 months has been overwhelming. The maker community and Hero Me users have been very supportive, such that I now have over 1,800 patrons of my Hero Me efforts on Patreon.
