Filing this one under Baron's Art Tips. Getting the correct flesh tones is a skill that requires practice and study, and I've never had much luck counting on happy accidents. So I do my homework.

      I am currently bring all the elements together for a very large colored pencil commission. It's a fantasy shipboard combat scene involving motley mix of individuals. There will even be an orc in it. 

     Now I don't want character to have the same mass-produced flesh tone, And I don't want to be figuring the different tones out while working on the finished piece. So I did these relatively quick skin tone studies and then noted all the different colors I'll need to create the desired skin tones. These skin tones are built up over multiple layers of color combinations.

    Note. These studies do not account for the exact lighting in the picture. That's being accounted for in the thumbnails.
