The answer to your question about the usefulness of this episode is in the title. Ennis Stussy's murder was not related to his past in LA, but it was related because that's how he randomly chose the name that randomly led to his murder. Gloria finds a box whose only function is to switch itself off. The non-existence of Santa despite Gloria seeing several. A candy bar called "Whachamacallit?" Friends on Facebook who are total strangers. The army wife who was married and divorced at the same time. Minsky the android who wants to help but can't actually do anything. Is Thaddeus Mobley just a pointless side quest or integral to finding the truth? Can it possibly be both? Some interesting things to ponder as we move forward I think.

To expand just a little further, think back to the very first scene of the season where you have Soviet secret police accusing a man of being in his twenties and murdering his girlfriend while the man is obviously older and appears to just be a German citizen. We can surmise what the truth is, but what does truth matter when you have no power? What does living for 2.38 million years matter if all you can do is say "I can help"?

We're still battling with that too. I think Seasons 1 and 2 had the superior premiere episodes, but Season 3 had the better 2nd episode. But S3E3 as you can see wasn't our favorite, but there's still so much stuff for them to play with... fingers crossed for another great season!
