Chapter 1 

Chapter 2 Spirit Detective

Leorio Paradinight was the third Spirit Detective, he had quite a bit of spirit power at a young age, and after an incident he fell on Spirit World’s radar.

His friend Pietro was close to death, dying from an illness that could be treated, because of their means it was likely Pietro would not survive. Leorio was with him when he died, cradling his friend’s body, he called out for help asking someone, anyone for help. Because of his spirit power he was not only able to see his friend’s soul as it left his body but also the grim reaper who came for him.

“Please! I’ll do anything!” Dangerous words.

A deal was struck, Pietro would have a second chance at life so long as Leorio went through a little ordeal and become Spirit Detective. The ordeal was a bit unique...but Pietro was revived and living a decent life now. Such things typically didn’t happen but Leorio’s potential pushed the issue.

He took the job receiving training from Botan for years and once he was old enough began taking cases. The job was lucrative enough, allowing Leorio to make some coin on the side. Using his abilities he made quite some money selling artifacts and antiques, he was a skilled haggler often getting stuff for cheap and flipping it to make some real cash.

His first few cases involved demon treasures being smuggled among artifacts. He was tasked with retrieving them one way or another. With his ability he could easily swap the item with a fake. Botan was very strict with what cases Leorio was allowed to take on, not wanting any repeats of what happened in the past. It was kinda annoying as taking down demons with bounties was sure to be more lucrative.

Leorio on the other hand thought he was ready. He wasn’t made of glass, he grew up on some pretty tough streets and detective training made him all the tougher. He knew how to use every beginner and intermediate tool at his disposal.

So after weeks of begging Botan finally got him an undercover case dealing with a real yokai. He was to investigate the “Yokai Doctor” a potential demon in disguise, one who was using otherworldly techniques to heal people. ‘Sounds like my kind of guy?’

After making contact with Yusuke Urameshi he reported in as instructed. Botan seemed worried about him which was cute. He kinda sorta had a thing for her, pretty girls could be seen as one of his weaknesses, he always acted a fool around them. Pretty boys tended to annoy him, as they had it so easy, girls just seemed to throw themselves at them. Leorio just had no luck with women, odds are he was looking for love in the wrong places.

With Botan this was strictly professional, it was her job to train him and make sure he honed his skills to be a first class detective.

Yusuke was something else though, he actually felt bad for deceiving him. He hadn’t lied exactly, much of what he told Yusuke was true just omitting certain things. Leorio wanted to hope that Yusuke wasn’t a bad guy, he didn’t want to fight him. He lied to bad people all the time, but a good guy, that just soured his soul.

“Leorio I trust I don’t have to remind you, to stay under cover, you can’t let him know you’re a spirit detective or that you work for Spirit World until you know he’s not a threat. He could kill you!”

“Botan, Botan, Botan, you worry too much, I’ll be fine, listen how about we celebrate my first day with a drink and a slice of pizza?”

Botan rubbed her temples. “If you do well on this mission I’ll consider it.”

“Yes!” He punched the air.

“Just as friends!”

“Hahaha sure sure!” He grinned.

“Leorio please focus, this case is complicated, but I trust you can handle it.”

“You can count on me!”

“I won’t be able to contact you while you are on your mission, be sure to report to me once your day is done.”

“Roger!” He hung up the communication mirror. ‘It’s my first day, how bad could it be?’

When he arrived at Yusuke’s Clinic the yokai was in a hurry. “We got an emergency case!”

“Wait what?!”

“You can follow me or stay here, but I have to go now!” Yusuke was off, moving very fast, so fast Leorio had to channel spirit energy into his legs to keep up with him. Paradinight didn’t know what was happening but his job was to keep an eye on Yusuke, so he followed.

“Yusuke, what’s going on?”

“We had a breach in the human world.”

“A breach?” Leorio sweats. ‘Botan didn’t tell me about anything like that.’

Breaches were similar to an outbreak, typically a demon gets passed the Makai Barrier, finding a way into the human world, they breach and typically it leaves a small hole which mends over time. Leorio had fixed a few breaches, as a form of clean up. A Spirit Hunter had already taken care of the demon.

They were taken seriously as a breach could lead to an outbreak. Because of his abilities, he was quite good at sealing breaches and portals.

The two made their way into the mountains, finding a trail of blood.

Leorio wasn’t prepared for what he was gonna find at the end of it. ‘What the hell?!’ His eyes widened when he saw the body, despite how it looked the boy was not human. What’s worse he was badly injured. He was missing a hand and most of his arm, half his face was burned, his knee caps were also scorched. ‘Is he even still alive?’

“Let’s move!” Yusuke made a move to press forward.

“Wait!” Leorio grabbed him by the arm.

Sure enough sensing the two the demon flared his aura, a wounded animal could be very dangerous and unpredictable, as such so was an injured demon. “Get back!” Leorio pulled out a knife.

He acted on instinct, and his instinct was to protect Yusuke.

“Relax, that’s not necessary.” Urameshi released his spirit energy, it filled the cave and washed over the two, they could feel his emotions, he was calm and collected, with a strong desire to help.

The demon’s aura calmed down and allowed Yusuke to approach. Leorio followed carefully behind. “What did this to him?”

“Probably a higher ranked demon, stronger demons often bully weaker demons, beating them up, tossing them around, even killing them. It was likely he was thought to be dead and the demon tossed him away. In a last act of survival he must have breached into the world.” Yusuke explained while taking note of his injuries.

“He’s missing an arm, and his legs are wrecked, it’s possible he has other wounds on him we can’t see.”

“We’ll start with his eye, that will need the most effort and we’ll need to act fast if we want to save it.”

“Save it? His eye is gone!” Yusuke smirked.

“I need him to be conscious, what I’m about to do takes extreme focus, so I need you to talk to him and keep him awake.” He put on some gloves.

Leorio took the boy’s hand. “Hey kid, kid, wake up!” His eye fluttered. “Yeah there you go, look at me, we are here to help.”

Yusuke channeled Spirit and Demon energy together. The boy hissed. “It’s gonna be okay, talk to me, can you tell me your name?”

“Gurk!” He tried to talk only to cough up blood.

“Shit!” Leorio checked and found burn wounds on his throat. ‘Who the fuck did this?’

“Keep talking to him, I’ll get his throat next, he doesn’t need to talk just stay awake.” Urameshi had strands of energy flowing from his fingers, blue on his right hand red from his left. It almost looked like he was performing laser surgery with energy.

Leorio took hold of his hand. “Hey kid, stay with me, squeeze my hand okay, once for yes, twice for no, three times for dunno.” He began to ask him a bunch of questions. “Do you like red? Do you like green? Do you like the water?” So on and so on, getting different squeezes as the questions went on.

Yusuke’s focus was intense, sweating from the strain of what he was doing.

Leorio’s bedside manner was fantastic. He kept the demon conscious. ‘What am I doing, this is a demon, should we be helping him?’ Before his eyes, Yusuke repaired his face even restoring his eye.

The demon blinked looking at the two with both his peepers. He tried to thank them only to cough up blood. “Hold it, this won’t take long.” He used spirit energy to heal his throat, with a technique less complicated than what he performed on his face. Leorio was taking mental notes, while keeping up the game of 100 questions.

Yusuke fixed his throat. “Now then, how about a name little guy?”

“Gon...my name is Gon…” He said smiling. “Thank...you…”

“Okay Gon, I’m Yusuke, this is my apprentice Leorio, we are gonna fix you up okay? This next part is gonna hurt like a bitch.” Gon giggled. “You’re a tough little guy aren’t you so you need to be still for me.”

He nodded.

Leorio watched as red energy flared and Yusuke began to regrow Gon’s arm, bones, muscle, tissue, all of it. Gon did scream and squeezed Leorio’s hand so hard he nearly broke it. “Fuck!”

“Relax, fixing bones is easy, regrowing them is the pain in the ass.” Yusuke said with a chuckle.

The process took quite a bit, Leorio having Gon do the lamaze breathing technique to get through it. “Gon, can you tell me what happened to you?”

“A big jerk called Genthru, he’s really mean, he said just because he was strong he could take whatever he wanted. I tried to fight him and he got mad, so he taught me a lesson.”

‘A lesson he blew up your arm, burned your face, messed up your kneecaps, burned your back and nearly scorched your throat.’ Leorio felt his anger rise, if he ever met this Genthru guy he’s gonna beat his ass tenfold.

His arm got restored and Yusuke moved onto the legs, there were more wounds on Gon’s back and the demon rolled over to be healed. These just needed spirit energy to fix, but the sheer amount of power he used was incredible. “Sleepy…” Gon murmured, the process taking a lot out of him as well.

“Whoo, I feel you kid, I could use a few drinks after that.” He removed his gloves.

Now that the crisis was over Leorio began to panic, this kid was a demon, so what now? What do they do with him? ‘Should I contact Spirit World for a transport? Wait...what will Spirit World do to him? He did technically enter the human world illegally. Fuck!’

“Hup!” Yusuke picked Gon up and lifted him onto his back. “You’ll need to rest your legs a few days, and that arm will take a few weeks to get full function in it, but I’m sure it’ll be as good as the old one.”

Gon cuddled on Yusuke clinging to him like a little baby bear. ‘Aww!’ Leorio mentally slapped himself. ‘Focus! That kid might be cute but he’s a demon, no matter what happens we’ll need to report this to Spirit World.’ Even low level demons could kill humans, wiping our a good number of people if no one stopped them.

“Where are we taking him?”

“Back to the clinic, where else.” They walked around for a bit, until they stumbled on the breach. Gon really did a number on it, it wasn’t closing. “Leorio can you close this? I’d do it, but I’m exhausted.”

“Sure!” Leorio stepped up and without thinking began sealing the breach.

“Man, you are pretty good at that Leorio, have you done this before?”

‘Crap!’ He chuckled. “No, no, but with my powers it just felt natural.”

“Uh huh, well I don’t sense any other trails so looks like only Gon came through.”

Leorio couldn’t believe how late it was, Gon’s treatments took a lot more time then he expected. Yusuke’s stomach and Gon’s stomach were growling like crazy. “Man oh man, what a day.”

“Sorry I wasn’t more help.” Since Leorio hadn’t used much spirit energy he wasn’t hungry.

“What are you talking about, you did great, never underestimate good bedside care. Lot of doctors don’t have that. You listened and observed to.”

“I observed, but I’m not sure I understand everything you just did!” Leorio said amazed.

“Well I can explain it over food.”

“How about Pizza, I know a place?” Urameshi’s stomach grumbled in agreement.

“That sounds so good, pick up some beers while you are at it, I’m gonna need to recharge something fierce.”

“Does alcohol make you stronger or something?”

“Yeah, for some reason it charges up my demon energy, must have gotten it from my mom.” Leorio read that there were some demons who gained power by drinking different things alcohol being one of them. They made it back to the clinic and Leorio went off to buy the food and contact Botan. He was pretty late on the check.

“There you are where have you been?”

“There was an emergency case, but everything is good.”

“What kind of an emergency?”

“I’ll explain later, I need to pick up some pizza and beer!”

“You have got to be kidding, you check in late and now you’re talking about date nonsense again.”

“No, no, no, it’s not for you Botan it’s for Yusuke. He burned up a lot of energy on this run. Anyway I gotta go I’ll check in I promise and give a full report.”

“Fine, but drop off the stuff and get out of there. I have something to report to you as well.” The call ended.

Leorio got the food and drink, rushing back to the clinic. Yusuke and Gon happily dug into the pizza and the doctor knocked back a can of beer. “Leorio, come have a drink with me, consider it a first day celebration.”

“I shouldn’t...I should get home before it gets too late.”

“Come on one drink won’t hurt ya...unless you got someone special waiting for ya huh?”

No he didn’t. Leorio sighed. “Right one drink won’t hurt let’s go boss!”

Leorio had a pounding headache. “Oh man what did I do last night?” He groaned.

The bed he was in shifted and Yusuke sat up. “Me!”

Leorio’s jaw dropped. “EHHH?!”
