My take on Ketil's reprehensible actions here is this: He always was a good man, even though he's been a coward throughout his life. He built up a good sized farm, and while he has slaves, he never mistreats them and even gives them a chance to earn their freedom. In this era, thats about as good of a man as one could ask for. But as good as he thinks he is, and even though he gives way more of his produce to the King than is necessary, he is now faced with Canute coming to take his farm by force anyway. So not only is he shook by the fact that his farm is going to be taken from him, but as soon as he gets back he hears that Arnheid was about to be taken from him too? (I get the feeling that he loves her in his own sick way) So in hearing that, its the last straw. So, unfortunately he takes out his frustrations on Arnheid in the form of physical violence. Its no excuse, of course. In that moment he's gone from a good man to instantly being an absolute monster who no longer sees even his slaves as human, but now as property that he can just physically take his frustrations out on. Its a terrible fall of a good man, in my opinion.

I agree for the most part. Ketil is a relatively kind man (not saintly, ofc)... almost exceptionally kind given the time period and his circumstances as a owner of a major operation run partly by slaves. However, a kind man is still a man, and is not above evil deeds when everything collapses around him. I think it's not even that big of a stretch to say that he is on the verge of Ego Death. Do I hate him? No, not really. I just find the whole situation lamentable for all parties.

Someone explained very well that Ketil is almost a role model person in that time period, he treated very well the slaves always and gave a chance to be free again. He keeps he promises true, look on the decision about Thorfinn and Einar. After a life of honest farming (with slaves:)), that was fine then) and always sending big “gifts” to the king he now is put in the position to forfeit everything he has gathered to the king and recently he had only one person in the farm who he trusted (I dk why just one, snake, his father are fine too) and that person tries to leave while he is away…

I hated Ketel when I first watched it, but now I feel sorry for him, Vinland Saga shows how hard it is to be a good guy in such a cruel world. How hard it is to get out of it (Thorfin) and how easy it is to fall in (Ketel)
