My elementary school teacher used to hit our hands with a ruler when we weren’t doing something correctly. That same teacher also tied my brother’s left hand behind his back so he was forced to write with his right hand. He was a lefty until that happened. She got fired a few years later when I was in high school, I don’t honestly remember the reason for her being fired though

Never heard of spankings for birthdays in school, but Texas is wild for the following. Texas is one of 17 states that allow corporal punishment in public schools, including charter schools. This includes hitting, spanking, paddling, or intentionally causing pain to discipline students. It's only legal if a school district's board of trustees adopts a policy allowing it, and if a parent or guardian doesn't provide a signed, written statement to the school board refusing permission. Parents can also revoke their statement at any time during the school year I grew up in Texas and by the time I started school it wasn't that prevalent but there was always at least 1 kid who would receive "licks" a semester. I went to a private school at the time. My older brothers would get "licks" almost daily at their public high school (always administered by the coach) and they learned to wear three pairs of shorts at once to provide padding. By the time I reached high school I transferred to a small public 1A school and it was used regularly on students there, they had the choice of in school suspension, running miles (any weather), or licks for punishment.

Just an FYI, antibiotics make you more sensitive to the sun and you can burn super easy! They also make chapstick with spf because it's actually pretty common to get burnt on your lips. Hoping QT has a quick recovery <3

Milo and Otis was made in Japan. The one we all watched was the original Japanese version just voiced over in English. While the US still can do better when it comes to animal actors we have come a long way, a lot of movies use CGI animals now, not because of animal welfare but because of cost and it's just annoying to work with real animals. While it's not for the best reasons it's still good they aren't being abused on set

Ok hear me out, this is gonna sound more complicated than it is. 100% a bunch of IRL streamers are going to go to the zoo anyway, it's great content. Alveus is a charity. The zoo could donate the use of a venue plus a certain amount of general admission tickets to Alveus as a tax writeoff. Alveus can then redistribute the tickets to IRL streamers for free (they'd have to RSVP ahead of time), and do a short bit about animal conservation for them. People looking to join the Alveus meetup at the zoo should buy a ticket ahead of time. The zoo gets a bunch of publicity at no cost to them, Alveus gets promoted by a bunch of IRL streamers, the venue is free or discounted for Alveus, the zoo gets a bunch of ticket sales ahead of time, and nobody involved will have to be turned away if the place gets too busy due to the IRL streamers inspiring a bunch of viewers to show up on the day itself. Thanks for coming to my TED talk i hope some of this is at least inspiring if it's not doable :P

smart idea by QT to work with her uncle to get on a random flight. my anxiety is always worse when traveling for a big, pre-planned thing with a lot of people. you can also look into exposure therapy for flight phobia, but of course that's the kind of thing to do with a therapist (which i am not)

So happy to hear Maya talk about Sea World's rehab program. Absolutely what they were doing with the killer whales is/was a problem and there are always going to be issues with companies like that, but when I was younger I went to Sea World camp for 5-6 years in a row where they'd teach kids about the animals and showed how they rehabilitate them and taught us SO MUCH stuff. They definitely do a lot of good, not just bad. It's refreshing to hear someone else recognize that too

Speaking of animal abuse. I went to this “petting zoo” in Tacoma WA and it was completely awful. I’m a Kindergarten teacher and otters are my favorite animal. So for teacher appreciation week, a family of one of my kids bought me an otter experience at this petting zoo. I had a bad feeling about it but didn’t want to bring anything up with the family, just wanted to be appreciative. After going, I was so sad and angry with the treatment of the animals they have there. The otters were in a small enclosure outside with one plastic kiddie pool to share. The wallaby looked extremely ill. And they had at least 7-8 goats in a space about twice the size of my shower. Truly disgusting and inhumane…

We had paddles in my elementary school, but only the principal was allowed to use them on the kids. I think they’d do birthday spankings too?? I can’t recall it very well since this was in like pre-k, but I think a parent got upset, and it was completely removed by the time I was in 1st grade. this was in like 2007
