Because of the timing release (just after 9/11) and the whole plane crash thing it was almost not at all publicized and made almost no money. As somebody who was target audience for this movie around that time it really reminds me of how strange a place the world was at that time - and to an extent hasn't recovered, the world never returned to how it was before so in a way to me it represents that break between before and after. I think subconsciously that's one of the things that makes this movie great, pure unadulterated accidental timing and the feeling it evokes. That destroyed it commercially at cinemas but made it one of the most cult of cult classics of all time. Without doing a whole teardown of the movie, yes, the choice thing is the point. He makes the choice to die and not have those other outcomes. There are good breakdowns of the movie on Youtube and I couldn't do it justice compared to those. I'm a big fan of Richard Kelly's follow-up movie that will some day get the recognition it deserves, hopefully with a proper release of a proper cut - I have the Cannes cut and first editions the books which are extremely rare and go for quite a lot of money these days - Southland Tales. It was such a commercial disaster after the interference of the studio (and the questioning of war in the Middle East before it was cool to do that) that Richard Kelly hasn't made a movie since. Southland Tales was worth the production budget to humanity just because of the number of memes it produced. It's a questionable masterpiece because of the complexity of cutting issues and the books being a prerequisite to it making sense, kinda, but definitely a masterpiece, and incredibly prescient.
