Sonar is becoming relevant again to detect small boats. During the Iranian hostage crisis my ship was on forward picket patrol specifically to detect patrol boat attacks using US sold harpoon missiles. The Russian ship probably didn’t have sonar and obviously didn’t have effective small boat defense weapons.
