The Borei-class SSBN (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear) represents a series of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines developed by Russia in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These submarines are designed as a cornerstone of Russia's naval strategic nuclear forces, intended to replace the aging Delta III, Delta IV, and Typhoon-class submarines.

Here is a technical overview of the Borei class:

Development and Deployment Development Began: In the 1990s, with the first submarine, Yury Dolgoruky, laid down in 1996.

Entered Service: The lead ship, Yury Dolgoruky, officially joined the Russian Navy in January 2013. Design Specifications Displacement: Approximately 24,000 tons submerged.

Length: ~170 meters.

Beam: 14 meters.

Propulsion: Nuclear-powered, featuring a water reactor and steam turbine propulsion system, enabling the submarines to reach speeds of up to 29 knots (approximately 54 km/h) submerged.

Crew: About 107 officers and enlisted personnel. Armament Primary Weapon System: Each Borei-class submarine is equipped with 16 RSM-56 Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), which are capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and have an estimated range of over 8,000 kilometers.

Additional Armaments: The submarines also have 8 or 6 torpedo tubes of 533 mm for self-defense, capable of launching torpedoes or anti-ship missiles. Capabilities Stealth: Designed with advanced noise reduction and stealth technologies to make detection by enemy forces more difficult.

Endurance: Nuclear propulsion provides virtually unlimited range and endurance, limited primarily by crew supplies and maintenance requirements. Strategic Role: Primarily tasked with the strategic mission of nuclear deterrence, the Borei-class submarines are a critical component of Russia's second-strike capability, designed to ensure the country's ability to respond to any nuclear attack with retaliatory strikes.

Variants

Borei-A: An improved version of the original Borei-class, featuring enhanced stealth, communication systems, and living conditions for the crew. The Borei-A variant also includes modifications to the missile compartment and improved operational capabilities. The Borei-class SSBNs are a significant part of Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent, ensuring the country maintains a credible second-strike capability. Their development and deployment underscore the importance of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) in global nuclear strategy.
