Attacking a US carrier in a 24kt sub with a 30 nautical mile range missile sounds like it would have been an exciting undertaking.

39:00 - prop in the foreground appears feathered. Engine failure on the P3?

Anonymous

P-3 can loiter with one engine shut down to conserve fuel. Of course, this making sense depends on the weight and the altitude.

Christopher R.

one of the first things P3s usually did was feather at least 1 engine on station to save fuel. on rare occasions we would even feather 2 engines to extend the patrol time. So seeing a feathered prop is fairly common

A great job as always! A few notes on the K-429 that I found: 1) Rear Admiral Yerofeyev did not get penalized in any way. In fact, he got promoted to the Northern Fleet, and later became commander-in-chief, until in 1998 large-scale abuse and misappropriation of funds was found on the Northern Fleet. He had a criminal case opened agaisnt him, but it was later dropped. However, that was finally enough to get him kicked out from the Navy in early '99. But, still, no real legal consequences for him. And, apparently he is still alive, aged 81. Rear Admiral Ryazantsev, who wrote a great book on the tragedy of K-141 Kursk, wrote about this character in his book and also blamed him for the poor training and maintenance levels on the fleet, which in turn led to loss of K-141. Also, the tragedy of K-278 Komsomolets happened during his time on the Northern fleet as well. 2) Alexey Gusev was not the captain of K-429, and did not get sentenced to prison. He was the chief of staff for the 10th submarine division which K-429 was part of. However, he was on K-429 during this incident, and he went together with the Captain of K-429 to protest the descision to deploy so quickly before the repairs were made. The captain of K-429 was Nikolay Suvorov, and he indeed was convicted to 10 years in prison, and commander of compartment 5 Boris Likhovozov got 8 years in prison. I couldn't find much info on what happened to both afterwards - but Captain Suvorov was trying to get his case heard again and get aquitted until his death in 1998. I guess he served the entire sentence, but I'm not sure.

My favourite sub to play with the mod in CW, I use it for its purpose in 1968 campaign. Launch those missiles on a convoy and bug out!

"Reactor cmp flooded with water, source of the water unknown; I assume it was from the ocean" that was a classic!
