In my world, the Navy is the DoD. It might be the whole DoD and if that is the case, it's a bargin.

Hey, Aaron, so with escalating tensions in the South China Sea I've read in the past year that some Naval brass isn't entirely sold on the F-18 and/or the F-35 as being "fighter-ready" aircraft. Granted the F-35 is a fifth-generation fighter and all ... the "brass" is considering wanting to bring back the F-14 for CAP. Is there any validity to this?

That is particularly true. The F-35 is not ready in enough numbers to sustain a fight. The F-14 is never coming back.... but the Extended Range AAW missile is in development.
