Naval Reactors 1 was the brainchild of Admiral Rickover and Chief Scientist John Craven. It has a fascinating and very secretive history, one that is not discussed even among submariners of the time.

She was never officially commissioned into the U.S. Navy to avoid budgetary and DOD oversight. It was funded by the Bureau of Ships, run by Admiral Rickover, and was his little special projects sub.

Now that she is 'Out of Service', some of her missions are becoming publicly published. I am using these publications as sources to tell the story of NR-1.

It's a fine line for me to walk as her history is not officially declassified, but public sources should be ok to use...at least that is what I'll tell the FBI, lol.

Big fan of John Craven! There was so much he couldn't talk about in his autobiography, so I'm looking forward to this.

It's fascinating hearing about some of these Cold War tales of derring-do as they slowly make their way into the public domain. I wonder how much vodka we'd need to ply Aaron with to get him to spill the good stuff...
