Season 11 has officially begun! And for this episode about an unlikable maker of films, we're joined once more by Stephen Sajdak, cohost of the great We Hate Movies podcast! Together we transport back to a time when Mel Gibson was a huge guest star and not a giant embarrassment, plus we dig into the send up of Hollywood circa-1999. So get ready for some stuff that hasn't aged well in our big season 11 premiere!

Bi-guy checking in here to confirm those awful stereotypes still exist today - bi guys are seen as "trying to deny they're gay," bi women are either doing it for attention, lesbians who won't commit, or greedy sex perverts, and non-binary folx undoubtedly have to deal with all of that to some degree. It sucks and seeing so much of media shit on bi people all the time really isn't fun, though I know it's not as bad as the rampant racism and misogyny present too. -- Anyway, this episode has some funny jokes, and (sigh) Mel Gibson *does* do a good job voice acting, but it is way too star-fucker-esque and it's just not fun to watch them fawn over someone we know is a complete piece of shit. Not a good start to season 11, but honestly there were worse episodes in season 10 still.

This really was the most quotable, laughable of “new Simpsons” circa 2002 syndication. Still doesn’t make it not unbearable.

I remember watching Braveheart and The Patriot in my public high school. They were educational supposedly being historical I guess. That’s just weird in retrospect.

I love this episode - not because it's good (it's not good), but because it's just fucking crazy. the premise is crazy and the whole damn thing is stupid, but it's fun-stupid. OH, also. after binge watching all 4 toy story movies - Mel sounds just like Tim Allen

You’ve got to give it to Gibson - his reads prove he was actually doing voice acting and not just showing up for a check. Not just selling the “Hi, everybody!” joke, but the “Yoink!” too.

I always thought Shaq was pretty friendly for a famous athlete, but man, the Hot Ones episode he did changed my mind. I know you shouldn’t judge people off of one appearance on a junk food based YouTube show, but he really didn’t come across well.

I wouldn't say Mel Gibson has completely recovered from his public remarks. Daddy's Home 2 was the last widely-released film production he had thought I definitely think they are now trying to play up his more unhinged, conservative aspects. I mean the newest movie he's in is called "The Professor and the Madman" made with Sean Penn went straight to Redbox. Unless he stays behind that director's chair (even with Hacksaw Ridge's moderate success) then I don't think he'll fully come back.

Haven't watched this one in forever but dang, you're right, Gibson does a great job voice acting. His Simpsons-style caricature is really well done, too. I have only seen one Mel Gibson film, and it's What Women Want. I saw it in a theatre. I think I watched it for Helen Hunt because it came out when I was still running my Hank Azaria fansite. Oh, and it sucked.

I was once chosen to be part of a test audience for a TV pilot. Remember the court drama "Laws of Chance' from the mid 2000s? No? Well, there's a damn good reason. It was piece of crap filled with cliched situations and manufactured drama. The lurid court case in the episode would have made the producers of Law and Order SVU cringe for it being creepy and exploitative. During the post viewing phone interview, I felt a little like Homer filling out his response card, though I didn't call it more boring then church. I don't know if they chalked me up as a nut or as the only person with the guts to tell them them the truth. In any case, I'd like to think that thanks to my input, ABC went with Shaq's Big Challenge instead. You're Welcome America!

If you want to be taken for a ride, look up Anne Heche's Wikipedia page. She says she was insane for the first 31 years of her life, including during the time she was dating Ellen. IIRC, she even demonstrated the alien language she made up for Barbara Walters in an interview. This bonkers-ass episode is really funny and it's unfortunate that it revolves around a garbage human being like Mel Gibson.

I’m sure that The Patriot took some heat for violence (a dude does take a cannonball to the face after all), but I recall it taking even more for how Mel Gibson’s character was essentially the “friendly slave owner.” I want to say Spike Lee was one of the more famous voices to speak out against it at the time?

I also remember it was lambasted for villainizing the brits to an absurd degree, just to make the americans look more noble.

A little off topic, but I remember watching this episode when it first aired. Later that night, I found out that my aunt had given birth to a baby girl. I always associate the episode with the birth of my cousin.
