Chapter 19

To pick the tiny man, and then throw him in the air. Make him go through the wall. That´s what Vera wanted to do. And it would´ve been really easy.

She´s a 9´6” woman, grabbing a man of about six-feet-tall, and then throwing him, it wouldn´t require such an effort from her.

But there´s a few reasons why she didn´t do it. First, it will call all of the attention at the restaurant. And just think that, due to her size, she already had plenty of attention. And, second, it wouldn´t work her way.

As she drove off, she clenched the steering wheel with anger. Wanting to pull if off actually.

How could a waiter be such an asshole? How could a waiter, at such a fancy, and classy, restaurant act in such a way?

“Unbelievable…” Was all she managed to say as she stopped at the red-light.

Harvey was uneasy. Was she mad at him too? She looks furious! But all of her rage was focused on that waiter. However, he´s not around at the moment… she won´t take it off on him, right?

Harvey stood there, on the ride home, afraid she´ll burst at any moment. And it would all fall on him. It would be better if he didn´t say a thing…

“Why are you so quiet?” She asked. Uh oh, it didn´t matter if he was quiet, there were only two people at the car, and he was one of them.

“I…” What should he say? I don´t know? Well, not knowing would piss her off. Just because? That sounds more like, why do you care? What could be the best answer?

She turned at him, the angry amazon looking straight at him, with all of her attention focused on him. He didn´t like it.

He was afraid she´ll get mad. What should he say? What can he say? What´s there to say that doesn´t piss her off? What? She´s a very short-tempered woman. And now that she´s mad, there´s no chance for him to get it wrong. Even the slightest mistake on his usage of words, and she´ll be lit!

She could see it, he was afraid. Why? Because of what happened at the restaurant? Can´t he see she did it for him? This was all on order to help him, not to get him all concerned. She´s not going to hurt him. He knows that, right?

“You know, I didn´t hear you saying thank you…” she said, trying not to sound threatening, trying to make her tone as calm as she could. Trying to sound as easy as she could manage to at the moment.

“Thank… you?” He asked.

“Yes. I´ve saved you from that guy back there. I stepped up and avoided things going the wrong way. I don´t know what was up with him, and I honestly don´t care. But no one should pick on you. And it was a big mistake that he did when I was with you.”

Harvey could see it now, she stepped in to protect him. That was nice. And he didn´t even say thank you? Well, that was a mistake from him. He´ll acknowledge it.

“You´re right. I… thanks for your help, Mrs…” he started.

“Vera! We´re not at the office, just call me by my first name. Vera.” A chance to call the boss by her first name?

More than a chance, she was giving him her permission. Although, he must put attention to what she said. They are not at the office, therefore, she expects him to call her in a more professional way at a work-environment. But right now, they are not at the office, he can call her by her first name. Which doesn´t feel correct, but if she says so…

“Thank you. Vera.” He smiled.

And that smile, that smile from him, it was enough to cool down the flaring anger from her heart.

She turned at him, her hands unclenching, her body relaxing. Her frown softening until it disappeared, and then, a smile grew on her face. “You´re welcome.” She replied.

Butterflies? Was she feeling butterflies? And, was it hot in there? As he smiles back at her, she feels so… good!

In the end, it would all be in the past. She´ll never go to that restaurant again, and she won´t ever see that waiter. However, Harvey, she´ll definitely see him, every day, at the office. What impression does she want him to get from her?

That she´s an ogre? That she´ll hurt anyone she can when she´s mad? That it doesn´t matter if she´s mad at them or not, in the end, she´ll take it on with anyone? No, that´s not it.

She wants to project the image of a fair woman. A woman who´ll be hard on those who deserve it. Mad at those who do wrong, and angry at those who make a mistake. But, she doesn´t want to seem like the kind of woman who´s always moody. Plus, she doesn´t want to look as if she got mad for everything.

But that´s the reputation she´s got so far…

She doesn’t care what people think, but she does care for what Harvey thinks.

“You´re… you´re ok, right?” She said, putting her large hand over his shoulder.

Harvey´s heart skipped a beat. Her tone, her actions, her body language, she seems concerned? She looks as if she cares. As if she truly meant it, and in a sweet way?

He´s never seen this side of hers. Maybe he was mistaken, maybe he was wrong. Perhaps, he was so concerned by everything that she saw any act, other than anger, as something nice?

“I´m fine. Thanks for asking.” He replied, blushing a little.

Vera noticed his blush, was it because of her touch? She immediately removed her hand from his shoulder and turned back at the rode as the light turned green.

“I must ask, why were you two arguing?” She said, trying to change the conversation a little.

Harvey wasn´t sure if it would be a good idea to say why. He wasn´t doing anything wrong, but he´s unsure, he doesn´t feel confident of what he´s about to say. But he must. She made the question, and she expects an answer.

“I thought… I thought he was rude with you.” He admitted.

“Rude?” Was he? She didn´t even pay attention to the waiter.

“Yes! He… he was making fun of your, uhm, your size.” She didn´t notice it? He could see it in her face, her eyebrows rising shifting, showing clear signs of confusion. She was trying to remember, but she can´t recall such comments.

“My size?” She asked.

“Yes! He was making fun of you because of your… the fact that… you… that you are…” he didn´t want to say it, what if she gets mad again?

“What? A big lady? An amazon of a woman? A giantess? Taller than the ceiling? Big like an elephant? That I could take down a bear? I´ve heard those, and I honestly don´t care.” He should´ve seen that coming, she´s been tall, a big lady her whole life, she must have heard it all.

Could it be that she developed some sort of mental filter? A way to block all those comments? People must´ve said it a lot, and they still do. Had she learned how not to listen? Or, was it that she didn´t care?

“I know I´m a big woman. And trust me, I don´t care for what people say. If I cared, I wouldn´t be here. I wouldn´t be as successful, as strong, as confident. Through the years, I´ve learned that I´m better off alone than with unpleasant company. Besides, there´s no one I can´t shut with a mere slap of my hand…” she chuckled with that last part, and he knows it´s true.

“But, listen,” she continued. “I appreciate it. That you stood for me. Thank you.”

“Y-you´re welcome.” He smiled.

“Even if I didn´t need it. AND, in the end, you were the one who was going to get beat. Now, listen to me right, I appreciate it, but the next time, make sure you can take the man down. If I hadn´t been there, then he would´ve hurt you. And I won´t allow anyone to hurt a date of mine…” she was sincere, although, too sincere.

“Date?” she was trying to make some sort of lecture. Scold him, just so that he understood. But in the end, she was too true with him.

Now, what is she going to do? They were close to his place, which was her old place. Should she stay quiet, not say a single word, until she drops him? No way, there´s still quite a way before they get there. It would be a very awkward silence.

She had another idea.

“Yes. A date. A dinner-date. It´s no big deal. I just invited you out for dinner because I think you are a bit lonely.” Why? Why does she have the need to mask things up? To hide her true feelings? And, in the meantime, she pushes him away a little.

Lonely? Does she think he´s lonely? That´s not something nice to say. Even if he might be an introvert, a bit shy at times, it´s not nice when people say it.

She could see it in his face. She made a mean comment. The conversation suddenly stopped. And now, things were very awkward. An awkward silence. An unpleasant, awkward, and uncomfortable silence.

She wasn´t sure what to do. Unaware if she should give it all up. Could she just stop the car and kiss him? No. Not right now, she knows there´s no such a bond between them. Not yet.

The best decision, the best she can do is to save it for later. For when the moment´s right. She should keep her feelings as a secret. For now, just for a bit longer. Until she´s certain the time has come.

However, she can´t just leave things as they are.

The car stopped, right in front of her old place. The place where she´ll drop Harvey. But, does she want things to stay this way? She feels like she just insulted him. And that´s the last thing she´d want to do after what´s happened.

The engine was shut, and, before he reached for the handle to open the door, she spoke.

“I know this wasn´t the best night. It could´ve been better, I´m sure. But I just want you to know that. You´re the best assistant I´ve had. I… I think you´re a nice guy. And I can´t stand when people do wrong to nice guys.” He looked at her, listened to her words.

Now, she didn´t have that aura of a though boss, she didn´t had the body language of someone authoritarian. Her words, her tone, she was expressing her true thoughts, and while doing so, he could tell it wasn´t as easy to her.

“I… I care for you. Believe me, you´re not just any assistant. I may not say this a lot, but you´re doing a great job. And I, I like… I like to have you at the company. I may not be able to say everything right now, but trust me when I say that, you´re special.” Special to her. But she won´t reveal it, not right now.

She has just planted a seed, of trust. And hopefully, she can be completely sincere soon. But right now, that´s all she´ll allow herself to say.

Probably, she can share more soon. But right now, she´s not sure, unsure of her true emotions, for now, that´s all she´ll say.

“You… you think I´m a good employee?” he asked, with hope in his eyes.

“You´re much more than that.” Once more, her hand was placed tenderly over his shoulder. “So much more…” Her face, her eyes, she was looking at him in a way he´s never seen before.

His heart pounded, what was happening? What does she mean?

There will be a moment when she explains, but not right now…
