So this film is a crime story. But it would also fall specifically under the genre of “Neo-Noir” Neo meaning new, and noir referring to the genre “noir” or “film noir” A popular genre of crime fiction from the 1930s and 1940s in both movies and books. It was known for the characteristics of gritty crime stories of hard boiled detectives or criminals in the dark criminal underworld. A voice over narration was a common characteristic of film noir. Another characteristic was its distinct visual style. Generally dark atmosphere lighting. So “The Usual Suspects” falls in this genre of neo-noir. A couple other great neo-noir crime stories for you to check out some time. “Sin City” (2005) “Wild at Heart” (1990) “Mulholland Drive” (2001) “Memento” (2000)

Kevin Spacey met with doctors and experts on cerebral palsy to discuss how it might affect his characterization. The title came from a famous line from Casablanca (1942): "Round up the usual suspects". Writer Christopher McQuarrie's inspiration for the character of Keyser Soze was a real-life murderer by the name of John List, who murdered his family and then disappeared for 17 years.
