You are full of surprises Dawn…

YES! More M.I. please 🙏

I was heartbroken when they killed Emilio in the first 5 minutes.

Bill W

My fancy has no nerve endings. 😀

Screwball Comedy Week Film Noir Week Fred Astaire Week (Ye dinna ken Fred Astaire!? Awa hame and read your bible!) For Astaire I'd recommend: The Gay Divorcee (1934); Top Hat (1935); Follow the Fleet (1936); Swing Time (1936) [these first four with Ginger Rogers]; Royal Wedding (1951 with Jane Powell); Daddy Long Legs (1955 with Leslie Caron); and Funny Face (1957 with Audrey Hepburn). And, of course, International Movie Week

Feel like 5 out of 7 is a solid prediction. I always skip from 1 to 3 on rewatches, because the director's...flair...is a little much for me, but I'm going to give it a another go for this series.

Dawn watches a whole lot of boy movies. How about a week devoted to strong female leads? Some examples: A League of Their Own (Sports) Hidden Figures (History) Black Swan (Drama) His Girl Friday (Romantic Comedy) The Descent (Horror) Bound (Suspense) Bridesmaids (Comedy) Hanna (Action)

Bartleby

I would add “Mermaids” “The Others” “Clueless” “Mulholland Drive” “Clan of the Cave Bear” “Elizabeth” “Carrie” “To Die For” “Barbarella”

Haywire (2011; Gina Carano) Destroyer (2018; Nicole Kidman) Fargo (1996; Frances McDormand) The Sound of Music (1965; Julie Andrews) Sicario (2015; Emily Blunt) What's Love Got To Do With It (1993; Anjela Bassett) Bring It On (2000; Kirsten Dunst) Salt (2010; Angelina Jolie)

After all the MI films that came afterwards, he probably was too 😂

N M

He probably blames it on "The Brat Pack" label.... which he's wrong about.

IMF = Impossible Missions Force

Dawn FYI Mission: Impossible was a US tv series that ran from 1966 - 1973. The group leader from season 2 through season 7 was played by Peter Graves who portrayed Capt. Clarence Oveur in AIRPLANE! He also starred in the 1988 - 1990 series reboot. The iconic theme song has been around for just as long, and is used for various purposes outside the tv show. It's been used on radio stations during traffic reports, in many comedy movies to spoof any scene that involves sneaking around, a complex plan, a heist etc ...(Wayne's World, for example). The original version was actually a radio hit back in the day, as was the cover you hear during the end credits which was composed/performed by U2's Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. It was a top 10 hit in the UK in '97.

FYI for Dawn: “Mission Impossible” was a long-running American TV series (1966-1973), one of many spy shows following the success of the James Bond movies. Fun fact: It was produced by Desilu Studios, which also produced Star Trek at the same time on the same old RKO Studios lot in Culver City, California (I was born and raised a few miles away). My Junior High School orchestra frequently played the theme music to finish their performances.

Jim Phelps was the leader of the IMF team after the first season of the TV series. He was played by Peter Graves, who you may remember as the pilot in “Airplane.” I remember disliking the ending of the first Mission Impossible movie because they turned Phelps from a hero in the TV show into a villain, totally out of character. (I got over it, the overall movie series is actually pretty great.)

Bill W

I agree making Phelps the villain was a real surprise heel turn.... but for the movie franchise sake they had to get him out of the leadership role so Cruise' character could take over. I supposed they could have just had him die during the mission and keep his integrity. I got over it too because the movie was so awesome. Now I appreciate the creativity.

Bill W

And Star Trek's Leonard Nimoy would go on to play Paris in M:I.

Alan Jones

Not me. I'm not over it yet. Saw the first film once. Never saw any of the sequels. Too much of fan of the classic TV series, and cannot forgive the trashing of Phelps, who was the bastion of rectitude in the original IMF-universe. Besides, the films seem (from what I can tell) to substitute action and effects in place of the genius-level hoaxing and scamming that were the hallmark of the old series. IMHO, of course, from an outsider's view of the films. That "gotcha" at the end of each episode was so satisfying.
