With a record low atmospheric temperature of -224ºC, Uranus gets the coldest of any planet in the Solar System. Comprised of an icy mantle enveloping a rock and ice core, this far way and frigid place is often referred to as an ‘ice giant’ planet. Thin dark rings surround the planet, which were likely formed by debris broken off its moons from impacts. Speaking of moons, at least 27 known moons orbit the planet, most if which are named after characters that appear in the work of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. In 1986, Voyager 2 flew past Uranus and captured the only close up images we have to this day. I hope we investigate this beautiful topaz colored planet more in the near future.
