Although Nuru was born in Tanzania her family moved to the United States shortly after her birth, and settled in Atlanta. Upon visiting her native country later in life, she awakened an urge to express her roots through fashion. However, the color combos and exquisite patterns of authentic Tanzanian designs were hard to find in American retail. Forced to stitch up her own threads, she discovered a great aptitude for fashion design. As a stand out talent in her community she caught the attention of the fashion world, including the Academy of Zed, which eventually sought her out and recruited her.
