Ah yes. 1x09. Where assisted suicide plotline is somehow the less depressing one. Yes The Magicians go dark here with a sense of dread just building for Quentin's (and viewers') realization. Casting Charles Shaughnessy aka 'Dad from The Nanny' as the creepy Plover was a brilliant move. Most of viewers would at least have some passing nostalgia fondness for the actor from that prior role. Here the casting lulls the viewers into false sense of security just to pull the rug from under us. The character being this horrible abuser twists the knife not only in Quentin's perception but also makes the viewers that much more sick over that implicit trust of relying on familiarity being now betrayed. Q learns a truly brutal lesson on separation of artist and art and idolizing monsters. Alice feels hopeless and Eliot just stamps all over her outrage with his nihilistic (and alcohol-fueled) world view. And the sins of the past remain unchanged. Truly brutal episode. Everyone go and watch some comedy after that.
