FYI, Rachel's second dad is Tony-award winning Broadway legend Brian Stokes Mitchell. As a theater kid, he was the one I recognized first.

There were two seasons of a reality show called "The Glee Project" that gave young artists the opportunity to earn guest appearances on Glee. Kinda like American Idol for Glee roles. The finalists were selected to appear for one, two or more episodes. You've already seen "the Gerber Baby" who was one of them. The character of "Rory" was one as was Samuel Larsen, who plays "Teen Jesus." The biggest find of all of them will appear later this season and thereafter as "Unique". The finalists from the second season of the Glee Project won roles beginning in the fourth season of Glee.

Great Reaction Travis! I agree with a lot of your points. First, I hated that they took away from Mike and Tina's moment as well. They are rarely featured, especially Mike and they didn't even give them a full performance. His voice on this though...so great! Fun fact: The song they sang L-O-V-E was Harry's audition song. Second, "I Will Always Love You." This episode aired like 3 days after Whitney died and I felt the same way as you. Whitney is a vocal legend. It's so hard to do her songs as she did them and not that I didn't like Mercedes' voice, you're right about the dynamics of the song, it just didn't have the same 'oomph' as the original did for me. and you're right that Whitney is so hard to emulate...In the biopic that just recently came out, they didn't even bother having the actress sing the songs, they just used recordings of Whitney because they know how hard it is to do it justice. So sad for Sam though! My Samcedes heart hurts with this one. Third, character development. I've always felt like Santana and Karofsky have the best character development throughout the series and I saw it in spades in this episode. It was nice to see Santana use her anger in a more productive way than physically fighting, and Naya uses facial expressions, sarcasm, and delivery to keep Santana's edge and I love it. Seeing Karofsky be so much softer and open and vulnerable was also nice. I liked seeing him be honest about his feelings for Kurt. I mean, I know Kurt is with Blaine, but I see the monumental growth that it took for Karofsky to do that, rather than internalize it and allow it to come out in anger and bullying like he did in the past, he verbalized it even knowing that he probably didn't have a chance in hell about getting what he wanted. A lot of people don't really acknowledge that. Fourthly, so glad that they portrayed Joe's decision the way they did and that they kept his faith strong while still being able to step outside of something so traditionally Christian. Also, loved Quinn's perspective during the classroom scene. Lastly, "Love Shack" and the return of Blaine. Darren was written out of the last episode and came in at the end of this one so that he could step into a leading Broadway role (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying - he took over for Daniel Radcliffe) but I loved the energy that came in this number. My eyes are always automatically drawn to Naya and Harry dancing in the background. Their energy and movement are magnetic to me.

I love this episode and the introduction of Rachel's dads. One other thing with I Will Always Love You - it became an unintentional tribute because Whitney died a few days before the episode aired. I think they added a message to the end of the ep.

scarr

"I miss Blaaaaaine" - same girl, same 😆 I remember being SO excited when he came back this episode - even though he was only out for 1 and 3/4 eps

Travis you’re dropping so much content I can’t even catch up on the shows I’m behind on 😝

Guillermo Orozco

Sugar deserves more love; she’s hilarious 😂

Flo

I don’t understand what Sugar adds to the show … she’s the only character from the first three seasons that I think could be cut from the show and it would have no impact on the sfhow whatsoever. The only thing she adds is being annoying but the show already has that character in Rachel and Sugar doesn’t even have the redeeming quality of a good singing voice.

Helen Moore

So fun fact Damian Mcginty who plays Rory is a founding member of Celtic Thunder.

Jennifer Tocalino

I Glee performance’s because some of their real personalities bleed into their characters. Those huge smiles are not Santana, that’s Naya.

Dani

It’s the perfectly timed “I miss Blaine.” for me! He comes back with the energy too. Once you have Blaine you never wanna go back he’s the sunshine of the show imo

Ilsuk Yang

Ah, so that's why Darren wasn't in this season as much! I was wondering about that when they first aired this season

"Teen Jesus." You're too funny Travis 🤣. You're not wrong about Mercedes' performance of "I Will Always Love You." The problem I have with that performance is a problem I have with quite a few performances on the show: it's too safe. We all know Amber Riley can sing, but it just felt too safe (not the song, the performance). Stylistically, it felt like it was somewhere in between Dolly Parton's original version and Whitney's version. I actually felt that way about a lot of the performances in this episode (particularly "Love Shack"). If I were to choose a favorite, it would probably be "My Heart's a Radio" (if that's not the name of the song, my bad 🤣) or "Love" from Mike and Tina (I was also mad that the showrunners took away from their moment). Onto my favorite moments from this episode. Your reaction to Sam rapping. Rory's reaction to Artie's song to Sugar and vice versa (I'm also not a huge fan of Sugar, but she can be funny at times, in small doses, though). And, of course, Jeff Goldblum playing one of Rachel's dads (acting like Jeff Goldblum 🤣). Karovsky being Kurt's secret admirer shocked me when I first saw this because I had forgotten he existed (week-to-week episodes will do that to you). On the other hand, it's very good character development for his character. I feel like Will is getting more and more sidelined during this season. Like he was barely in this episode. Anyways, always enjoy your reactions Travis!

Gracie

You should react to Artie and Tina on Celebrity Drag Race

Gemma Rivera

Agree 100 percent with this. It gets hard to separate some of the things at times because Ryan Murphy weaved so much of the actors into their characters. Love how Naya comes through in those little moments

Staton Chapman

I felt so sad for artie in this episode

Erin

How dare you talk about anything other than Brittana when they kiss. 😂 my babies 😭

Annie Willow

Santana has been through hell and she’s finally at a point where she is happy and accepting herself and she is not going to let anyone take that away from her. I just love seeing fluffy, happy Brittana. They are so good for each other and they just are adorable together. And that “Santana and Brittany’s Infinite Playlist” is hysterical and just shows how chaoticly awesome they really are as a couple.

Capri Zonica

Most of the songs didn't match the storylines this time. "Love Shack" should've been sung by Brittana, (and Klaine), only because they couldn't kiss at school but the Sugar's party was a free place for them, plus the song fiit their voices. Even Finchel called for a song but I'll never complain about that. "I will always love you", felt out of place and tone for the episode. Rory's song was boring. Stereo hearts was meh... Didn't like the Cherish mashup, except for Quinn that should've sung it by herlsef but still, barely interacted wth Brittana.

Siobhan Linehan

I have so many mixed feelings about this episode. I loved Rory's song, he has a beautiful voice and I wish he was used more in the show despite the almost offensive Irish stereotypes. I loved Stereo Hearts too, Joe sounds SO good in that one and I love the Sam and Rachel moments in that song, they make my Samchel shipping heart happy lol. I agree that casting Jeff Goldblum as one of Rachel's dads is genius, he's so funny, what an icon. And I also really enjoy the Brittana moments in this episode, they're very cute. But I really don't understand why Finn and Rachel's parents don't just tell them that they're not happy with the marriage idea. They know Rachel well enough by now to understand that manipulation doesn't work with her, she's a very straight forward person. I didn't get that at all. I also feel uncomfortable with the God Squad stuff, while I'm glad they came around in the end, I hate that singing to Brittany and Santana was even up for debate. This is why I don't like religion, everyone should be free to be religious if they choose to of course, but religion is the reason that my parents are homophobic and that's caused me so much pain over the years, it still does, I'll maybe never be able to come out to them. So yeah, all the God Squad stuff just makes me sad. And I feel like I would've rather seen more focus on Mike and Tina than on Sam and Mercedes, but I am a bit biased there because I don't like Sam and Mercedes together lol. But Mike and Tina really are under used sadly. So yeah a mixed episode for me. Oh and also, the next episode is the episode I warned you about on Discord when I was on there. It will be very triggering for you so just prepare yourself for that. I still haven't decided if I'll watch it with you yet, I might just watch your reactions to the songs and skip the rest. Not sure. But yeah just make sure you're prepared because I'm worried about how you're going to handle it. 💕

Ilsuk Yang

Oh, is "Stereo Hearts" the name of that song? I went for the obvious title of "My Heart's a Radio", lol. Wasn't the obvious title this time, huh?

Siobhan Linehan

Yeah it's called Stereo Hearts. But that title doesn't make much sense with the song lol so I totally understand why you guessed the name as that. 🙂

leslie martin

i completely agree with "i will always love you"! of course Mercedes/Amber has an amazing voice, and she has showed us that she can do those big song justice but this one... didn't really stick to me.. i never listen to it and it's really not a very spoken about cover in the fandom! i feel like with big songs like that, you need to be AMAZING or you get eaten by the song! bc there's been 1000 of cover of this song and you're just another one that's added and doesn't bring anything new! Glee showed us that they can cover BIG songs like this (Mercedes with "ain't now way" or "and i'm telling you", Rachel with "don't rain on my parade" or "it's all coming back", or even Sunshine with "all by myself") but this time.. it really is a miss for me and a forgettable cover... (of course she still sounds great, but not amazing and not original/memorable or even emotional?). i don't have any intel on this cover bc no one from the cast/crew ever talked about it but maybe it was the producers that did a bad job, maybe Amber wanted to play it safe or maybe she was having a "bad" day in the booth? maybe the pressure was too high and it's too much of an iconic song to risk to do it "too original"? idk, only speculations. but when you know how talented she is, it is disappointing imo also add that to the fact that the samcedes ship does absolutely nothing to me and you get a very "boring" song to me (she still sounds better than 90% of the people on the radio atm lol)

JIM SCHMITZ

$0.02...As with Josh Groban's appearances in season 1, I was so disappointed that Brain Stokes Mitchell didn't get a number, especially knowing his block-busting vocal chops.

Max Ride

One of Mercedes's stand-out performances next to And I am Telling You. I still get chills listening to her sing this.

Jeanette Dawe

one of my favorite episodes. I love Joe wish they gave him a better story line though, they do him dirty season 4. He was so good in "The Glee Project" where these new students came from (Rory, Joe, Harmony the girl from the beginning of the season who looked like Rachel and another character you will meet later (or have by now)

Kristin Baylor

Quinn with the lesbian flag dress 😆
