Someone wrote to me on tumblr with an idea they had for a Dungeons and Dragons character: an Illithid (also called Mindflayers; cool Cthulhu-looking psychic monsters that eat brains) turned into a human via magic. I love that idea a lot, so I painted a few explorations of what that character might look like.

Illithids have tentacles instead of a lower face, so I thought it might be neat if the human-morphed character's hair looked like tentacles, to keep with their #aesthetic. Here are two styles I came up with for two different hair textures.

here is the sketch underneath all the paint-- I built solid silhouettes for the hair first, then painted in the details on top.

and here's a sketch with a very different design that I posted to tumblr a while ago, back when I first heard the idea for this character:

Between this and getting gifted Pathfinder Kingmaker on Steam, I'm pretty much ready to grab a kitchen knife and sprint out in search of goblins. I love this interpretation of mindflayer tentacles on a human form! :OOO
