Can I just say that the soundtrack in this film is aggressively unsettling... and the concept is really neat for a horror/ thriller situation.  Also...James Wan or Mike Flanagan?  Who do you prefer and why?

I never quite know if James Wan is joking or not. It seems like he's always trying to achieve a certain goal (whether it be Serious Old-Fashioned Horror, 80s homage horror, comedy horror/satire, etc.) but not quite getting there in a way that is tonally consistent and effective (from my perspective). It never lands in a clear way and so, for me personally, his films just don't work. I can't take them seriously nor fully enjoy/appreciate them as comedy/satire/silly homages. In saying that, I don't mind The Conjuring. I think the vibe is at least consistent with that one, and the characters are well-developed, well-acted and sympathetic - even if the story is not all that compelling (again, just in my opinion). So, for those reasons, I suppose I'll pick Mike Flanagan, because I quite liked Hush and Oculus, and loved Hill House (the way he adapted the novel was very interesting - it's totally different, so if you're exposed to one or the other first, nothing at all will be spoiled and you can still enjoy the story in the other format as if for the first time).
