Mahito's cursed technique, Idle Transfiguration, allows him to directly touch someone's soul and change its "shape", whatever that means 🙃. Weirdly enough, changing the shape of someone's soul morphs their physical shape as well. Usually he uses this ability to turn people into mindless, grotesque monsters - but as we see here it can also be used to "heal" a damaged body. Mechamaru is a unique case, since he is affected by a heavenly pact, his "damaged" body is actually his body in its default state under the condition of his pact, and trying to heal him with something like reverse cursed technique presumably cannot fix him, otherwise Shoko or someone could have done that ages ago. Idle Transfiguration seems to bypass the pact by changing his soul instead, which then forces his body to change shape to however Mahito wants. There's an overarching mystery in this series on what the connection between a body and soul is, and Mahito's technique is providing potential answers to that mystery.

I remember Mahito changing humans to curses in season 1 just didn't realize it can work the other way around! Thank you for pointing out that reversed cursed energy wouldn't have worked on Muta. Your insight on the heavy pact and now the idle transformation has been so helpful to me!
