Sokka bonding with Sai over engineering reminds us how young he is, and how in wartime, it’s hard to focus on simple joys. Katara explores her trauma and learns to remember the good things about her mom in moments where she feels held back by her death. Jet shows how easy it can be to cross the line into cruelty even with seemingly noble convictions.

The fight choreography was particularly cool in this episode. Jet’s dual, hooked swords show impressive range and grace. Zuko and Aang’s hand-to-hand combat was not only performed with technical excellence but it was edited simply, which often makes fights feel far better. It’s too common to miss moves and fabricate a fast pace with many quick cuts. Can't wait to see what episode 4 brings.

I posted this on YouTube but I felt it was worth repeating here... I am finding the reactions from purests the most interesting. Niether good nor bad, just interesting. Personal Opinion: As someone who watched the cartoon back in the day and several times over throughout the years, I love this retelling. Honestly, even though it's a thousand times shorter than One Piece, it faces the same challenges as a live action: IT CANNOT BE ONE TO ONE. Which is the same problem every anime, animated, or even written (ie: books and comics) media faces when transfered to live action. It just doesn't work. The creators of One Piece knew that, realized they had 30 years of hindsight and a big enough world to move some pieces around and STILL end up with the same story that would work with the media of live action and hook new audiences and longer running fans alike. I think the creators of this ATLAB have done amazing! Blending the arcs as they have allows room for the story to breath in the time and media they are given. I'm also finding some of the smaller tweeks fun because while they aren't orginal to the story they still make sense to the story and add something new for us enjoy instead of just recycling every detail. The bottom line of it all is that you can tell the people who worked on this show love the original content it was based on and have remained respectful of it even through an awful lot of heat and mudslinging from the fan community. I think that counts for an awful lot. 💗 This has been my Ted Talk.😅

2024-03-10 20:59:11 Great Reaction! I think its not that much of a huge difference cause the character's motives are still the same, it just went about in a different way/location. For example in the cartoon, JET was gonna blow up a dam and therefore a small village with innocent people. Here, they just made JET and his team blow up areas of the city STILL inhabited innocent people. In both versions, The Mechanist was indeed a traitor and making things for the fire nation...so combining their storylines makes sense as their intertwined (Jet hate anything associated with the Fire Nation). So check! They got that right. I also dont mind that it occurred in Omashu because in the cartoon, the Jet stuff happened in a random forest😂 And most fans say that the weakest episode in the cartoon is "The Northern Airtemple" where they randomly meet the mechanist. So combining 1 random episode, with one very diskliked one, to create a more epic tail was smart writing. As they share similar themes. At first I have to admit I was hesitant at the changes in this ep...but as fan I can say they did an alright job here. Very difficult to do to satisfy BOTH newcomers AND fans. It makes sense for fans to feel overwhelmed by the combination of like 3 episodes in 1😂 But I hear NEW watchers loved it! So there are VERY diverse opinions from different viewers which I find very intriguing.

As an ATLA superfan, my biggest problem is not the fact that they made changes to the narrative structure or even characters. It's the extremely poor writing, acting, and pacing. It's shocking to me that a major studio was able to produce media that leans so heavily on the "tell, don't show" writing faux pas. These writing choices make characters less bland, make emotionally impactful moments carry less weight, and muddy the entire viewing experience. One doesn't need to have any familiarity with the OG show to recognize these flaws. Additionally, I saw someone point out that with its 8 hour-long episodes, it actually had the same runtime as the original series' first book. So you would think they would be able to tell a coherent and well-written story. But somehow even with removing unnecessary parts of the show and combining 3 - 4 episodes into one, everything still felt rushed.
