Was looking forward to your reaction and glad you mostly came into it with an open mind. I thought the film was phenomenal and I thoroughly enjoyed it (as did the group of girl friends I saw it with in theaters). My mom cried when she saw it. Maybe seeing it as a woman is a fundamentally different experience? At least it was for me (not speaking for all women). I think everyone can enjoy it though. I don’t know if Oak realized the parallel when he started saying how he has a sister and nieces and stuff (around 1:01:40), compared to the boardroom scene when Will Ferrell said he was the son of a mother…but I thought it was funny. Glad you got all of the movie references (I’d expect nothing less) and that you appreciated the set design. I loved the performances of Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, and Ryan Gosling. I do think Margot’s acting was the best in the film because it was the more difficult part. It’s not as obvious as Gosling’s but was more challenging, imo. I thought he still did a great job though. I also think the film did a good job of criticizing the impact that patriarchy has on BOTH men and women. That’s why he had the “I am Kenough” sweatshirt at the end and a part of why he had the breakdown. Patriarchy put too much pressure on him too. Don’t know if Oak picked up on that as much given his criticism, but was glad Mason Quinn pointed it out at the end. Obviously the focus was on the impact of patriarchy on women, but like…it’s Barbie….hahah. Overall another solid reaction and really appreciate you all sitting down to watch it.

Yeah it’s a big deal. This show is considered one of the big 3 along with Naruto, and Dragon Ball. There’s been some to come close but this one has been consistent. I hope you guys start looking into some Anime MOVIES. Maybe starting with Akira or maybe Princess Mononoke.

maybe i’m ignorant saying it but there is nothing more meta than people hating on this movie for the same reason it was made for and is about. so many people really missed the mark in understanding the concept.

I went into Barbie thinking it was maybe going to be like Elf but with Barbie exploring the human world for the whole movie. I knew obviously that this wasn't targeted towards me. It did have some really fun stuff especially the beginning 30 minutes. Personally, I didn't like it all that much but I can see where people would love it and really connect with it and empower them. But happy it did well and really happy for Margot too. She's amazing in everything she does!
