I don't think that its just because of the firebenders i think it is also due to him saying that bending is the cause of every war in every era

I mean, you guys laugh at the Equalist promoter, but what they were doing is literally oppressing him. He's using his freedom of speech to promote something that he believes in, and then they came and used violence to intimidate, threaten, and damage his property simply because he says things they disagree with. That's oppression.

When it comes to fighting I think it can be compared to Traditional Martial Arts and Modern/Mixed Martial Arts. Korra has been training in traditional bending and here they have a more modern style of fighting here, plus she never really had to test her skills in a real life combat situation before so it a learning curve right now. It shows that white lotus keeping korra locked away was a bad move not only is she socially and culturally inept but she did not learn new styles of fighting. Every other avatar had to spend years with the other nations to train not only to bend but learn their culture.

Korra uses lots of fire because of her personality. I imagine her to be a really aggressive water bender if she weren't the avatar. She may even create a form of offensive techniques akin to Toph mastery over earth.
