I don't remember if the movies mention Grindelwald, but the books do. Grindelwald and Dumbledore were friends, but then became Rivals. Grindelwald once held the Elder Wand and used it to terrorize Europe.

Grindlewald was in the DH part 1 flim. He tells Voldy where the elder wand is(In the movie) And Hermione tells harry his name as well.
