This movie was like a big family therapy session and I’m so glad you guys liked it !! About Joy, I also think she wanted to just end it all but it could be interpreted in many ways. Literally or just not caring about anything anymore, including her mother. I also love how they touched on intergenerational trauma. You can clearly see how Evelyn has been traumatized by the lack of love by her dad, or how he didn’t try to stop her when she left, or how she always thought that she was a disappointment to him (even though this might not have been the case, but he never showed her anything other than indifference). This learnt behavior is exactly the same that Evelyn is teaching Joy. She loves her daughter but doesn’t know how to show it to her, so she hides her feelings under comments like “you’re getting fat” because it’s easier than saying “I love you” or “I am proud of you”. It’s also most likely all that she’s been taught by her family. I also loooove her husband and what he represents. They showed that through all of the multiverses, he has always been a kind person. Evelyn took his love and kindness for granted and she has always seen him as a failure, but she realized at the end that what she considered as being too passive or too nice, was actually a strength, and what actually saved their family. Waymond is shown to be a leader in the Alpha verse, to be successful in the multiverse where she becomes an actress, he successfully convinced the IRS officer to give them another chance … Evelyn has always underestimated him, maybe because of what her dad said about wasting her life on what is, arguably one of the best thing that has ever happened to her, but he is truly the glue that holds this family together. The other great message I got was that everything means nothing and if nothing matters, then you’re free to live your life as you wish ;) P.S.: another recommendation for a movie would be Jojo Rabbit, by Taika. You also have to keep an open mind for this one but there are some great lessons in here too. Might be one of Taika’s best.
