This comment is a year late to the game, but I caught The Oak wondering about it - this is a future version of the U.S, with all the different regions grouped into districts. District 12 is the Appalachians - West Virginia and such. The point of the Games isn't so much about the moral decay of society - although that's obviously part of it. Seventy-five years in the past, the districts went to war against the Capital, and ultimately the Capital won. The Hunger Games were imposed on the Districts as punitive war reparations, intended to be an annual reminder of the consequences of rebellion.

The new one I believe is a prequel telling about Snow and how his upbringing got him to where he was as President. I have the book haven’t read it yet but excited to get to it!

I’m halfway through the prequel book at the moment. It’s really really good. Snow is 18ish and the 10th Hunger Games are about to take place.

2022-08-14 11:04:00 Loving the Hunger Games reactions. The books & movies are personal favourites of mine. Glad to see you are enjoying them too. I just want to explain one thing that I see many reactors don’t quite understand when watching Catching Fire… Peeta paints Rue to hold the Gamemakers & Capitol accountable for the death of that little girl. She is the symbol of what is so wrong with what they are doing. Katniss is inspired by Peeta so she hangs Seneca Crane… to also hold them accountable for his forcing him to kill himself instead of eating the berries.

Just to add onto Jamie's point- the movie didn't have time but they didn't include the scores for their training sessions- Katniss and Peeta both made Hunger Games history and both got 12s- the gamemakers did it so the rest of the tributes would have no choice but to target them- Haymitch was pretty made about that part but that's honestly when Katniss started feeling Peeta more

I joined your Patreon to follow this. I’m not sure if anyone has brought this up before. Hunger Games was based in part on the myth of the Minotaur. Athens had to send 12 boys and 12 girls as tribute into the Labryinth to face the Minotaur and were all basically killed. So much relates back to Greek or Roman myths. Pan Em is shortened Latin for “panem er circenses”…bread and circuses. It’s what Rome used to keep the populace under control. Entertainment (gladiators etc.) and food gifts. It kept them compliant. You can see it in the character names. Plutarch, Cato, Seneca, Coriolanus (Pres. Snow) and many others. When you watch or read this story, you’re basically watching the fall of Rome transplanted to a different time period.
