Would you rather have the Wand or Staff?

Is this question a movie/story preference, or specifically Wand or Staff? Because I think the LOTR story has no equal. But the magic in HP is far more practical and frankly OP than that of LOTR

Ah then yeah Wand for sure. Poor Gandalf rode a Horse for days to get around, instead of just a simple apparate in a second or a fun fly on a broomstick for a couple of hours. Maybe I'd go staff when I'm 70 and can rock the look.

I'd take a wand like lucius' for sure. hidden in a cane with a badass dragon or wolf head on the top.

Kristin Carter

I love both, but a wand would be easier to use!

I agree, the magic in Harry Potter is more practical. But although the magic is practical etc, it's almost too fantastical. I mean, it's fun to dream yourself away into the world of Harry Potter as a kid. I am a 1990 April kid just like Emma Watson. So I grew up with them. But as fantastical as the magic is, there is a line where the fantastical grows into the absurd. And as a writer it's easy to cover up bad lazy writing with "oh, it's magic". Rowling just isn't good enough of a writer to make it all make sense. She sort of made it up as she went. So I have to give it to Tolkien for a magic system that makes sense. Rowling's is fantastical but often nonsensical. Using Latin words for the spells doesn't make them make sense. And yes, in the books there is some semblance of sanity. But it's so shallow. It's like Rowling never really bothered to build up the world outside of the Harry Potter books. Which is shown from how easily she has been able to rentcon and just say this or that. It's just all made up at the spot.

In terms of Magic this is comparing apples to oranges. In Tolkiens world magic isn't something for the peoples. Magic is something wizards/the Maiar are GRANTED with, who aren't just people. For this kind of voting you need to compare two magic system where both involve normal people. Of course Harry Potter will win because that is a magic system with normal people...

Never been a fan of wands, they feel too light and puny. Why cast my magic with a twig, when I can use a hefty branch? I like my magic BIG, give me a staff any day! Also, if we're going by LotR rules there's only five wizard's staffs in all of existence you could own, and they're basically god-artifacts, but wands in HP are essentially dime-a-dozen. The staffs are way more valuable, and potentially way more powerful.

No no, it’s like this: HP Magic in Lotr universe. The lotr universe is absolute top tier, but the magic in hp is more substantial and fleshed out. I love them both and wouldn’t want one over the other.

I have a wand and the packaging said that it doesn't really do magic. Well, I'll be the judge of that! 10 3/4", fir wood, unicorn hair core... flexibility is unyielding. I turned a co-worker into a newt last week.

Decapitated. Whole big thing. We had a funeral for a bird.

I'm pretty sure none of that is real. Hey you're not real man. IYKYK

I’m too biased because I’ve never seen Lord of The Rings 😳

I like Both, but for this choice HP is the winner for me. If the choice were between HP and the Hobbit trilogy, it would be so much tougher for me to choose. Both are equally great.

different tools for different jobs, i feel a staff is the old man wand, like when you need a walking stick or cane but dont want to give up the free hand for a wand, you can just make your cane a wand like hagrids umbrella
