In Japan, they did multiple Character Popularity Polls and Levi consistently ranked number 1, above the three main characters, so it makes sense that we get these OVAs of him. I personally like Hange the most and I would watch the crap out of OVAs about their origin story too haha.

Please watch Ilse’s notebook (its the first OVA in the crunchyroll list) before season 2 episode 2. Also, the rest of the other OVAs are optional for you to learn and understand about the other characters. DO NOT watch the lost girls OVA as some scenes contain major spoilers for future seasons. Lastly, I recommend watching Attack on titan in 9 minutes by Gigguk in YT. It would be a good palate cleanser before season 2.

Also, no matter how much some people may pressure you, remember that the OVA and other side stuff is optional. I watched all seasons of Attack on Titan without watching any of the side stuff and still enjoyed and understood the show. I'll be watching No Regrets for the first time today to watch along with you guys.

I love the OVA but here is the speach Erwin gave Levi in the Manga (and i think its so much more impactful): “Who was it who killed my subordinates? Killed your friends? Was it me? Or was it you? It’s the titans! Where did they come from? Why do they exist? Why do they kill humans? I don’t have the answers. None of us do. Limited by our ignorance, we’ll continue to be devoured by the titans! If we just stay shut behind the walls, we are never going to escape this nightmare. Take a good look around you! No matter how far you go, there aren’t any walls here. I actually watched No Regrets after I had finished season 4 😒 and let me tell you: I have regrets. I wish I had watched it right after season 1 like you guys did, it would have given me an even greater appreciation of Levi's character. My heart absolutely broke for him in this OVA, he's got such a tragic backstory. And that damn song! 😭 I listen to the AOT soundtrack regularly while driving, and whenever So ist es immer comes on, I feel like weeping. Great reaction as always. 👍🏼❤️

It is very tough for me to declare the No Regrets OVAs within my top 10 favorite episodes because there are so many insane episodes in the later seasons, but they are definitely top 15 and my favorite content from S1. They managed to make me appreciate Levi’s character and several moments with him throughout the seasons so much more to the point he is probably within my top 3. This episode in particular was pretty much a parallel to Eren during the forest, having to make the choice between trusting himself or his comrades. In both instances they chose “wrong”, leading to the death of people they cared for. These type of choices have profound impacts to their characters. Something to note: The Scout Regiment commander at this time is not Erwin, he is still only a squad leader. The commander is the same guy that we saw in the first episode, the one that presented the soldier’s arm to the mother. But you can clearly see how Erwin is slowly getting to that position.

Regarding Ilse’s Notebook, there is obviously disagreement as to when to watch it. In my opinion it can be watched at any time after S1 and before S3. Personally, I wouldnt watch it within S2 to let S2’s story play out without interruptions. I’m leaning more for watching it after S2 as it would please more people.

Also to add to Mason Quinn's point, a lot of the emotions portrayed in anime is by the voice acting. People don't pick this up when they are just starting to watch anime, but the jp voice actors are in a league of their own, and in AoT they have some of the best voice actors in the industry.

What Erwin said to Levi about not starting to regret his decisions stuck with him and when I heard Levi say it to Eren in s1, it stuck with me too, because I really needed to hear that during that time of my life. These two characters are in my top 5 favorite aot characters, can't wait til you learn more about Erwin ❤️

No spoilers: The character in the intro who is covered in blood is Armin. This scene is only in this intro, not in the show. It shows you how Armin, despite all the horror around him, can calmly think and get to a solution (all the candles aka possibilities in his head going out except the "right answer")

The No Regrets OVA’s never fail to make my heart just weep for Levi. I was lucky to watch this a few episodes into season 2 and everytime I hear that ost.. man it never fails to stab me in the heart. This one definitely makes you have a much more in-depth read and appreciation for our cut-throat captain, he really does have no one at this point ((╥_╥) ) if you think about it, he lost his family twice, both here and the Levi Squad. I’m glad you guys enjoyed these (as heartbreaking as they were) and you guys appreciate this show as much as we do. Stay healthy and take care Badd Medicine 💖

* ILSE'S NOTEBOOK is another OVA that's an ok watch, not really important & can be ignored overall since it doesn't really add to the main story. Many have argued WHEN to watch it because it takes away a shock factor in the upcoming episodes of Season 2. So if you decide on it it's best to watch it AFTER Season 2 before entering Season 3 to play it safe

Had to join your Patreon as soon as I saw you were doing AOT and have been thoroughly enjoying it. As for the OVAs, I love Levi’s character so enjoyed going into his backstory. Ilse’s notebook, if you do it, shouldn’t be watched before the first part of season 2. There are reveals that should just come from season 2. My vote is to go to season 2 next week.

Dave, I agree 100% with your comments regarding Erwin and Levi. It’s fascinating to me to see where they came from in relation to each other compared to how it is now—Levi is unwavering in his loyalty and trust in Erwin, and Erwin considers Levi his right-hand man. I think it’s brilliant that they started out as enemies and grew to trust each other so much. And of course just seeing what Levi has lived through, losing his best friends and then losing his squad in season one…the guy has been through it. I’m so happy you guys watched these! Personally I’m indifferent about you watching the other OVA’s, but this one to me is a necessity.

I had inklings on what possibly happened to Levi but, I mean I didn’t have much of an opinion on him since it would make sense for some people to be like that when put in the world of AoT. No spoilers in my comment just advice about OVA’s so you don’t get spoiled by them. My advice is go straight to Season 2 now and don’t watch any other OVA’s until a little later to avoid getting spoiled/hinted by them. So there’s Isles notebook, which will spoil 2 things in season 2 (everyone is saying after S2EP1 but are forgetting it hints at stuff from the S210 so if you do watch it make sure it’s after S2EP10) but is still worth watching later on. There are 2 OVA’s regarding Annie like Levi’s OVA’s that have huge spoilers so I’d avoid those ones until later too. There is an OVA on Mikasa but I believe that takes place after season 2 or 3, forgive me I can’t remember when it came out lol. And then there are 2 others which in my opinion aren’t really worth watching as one is just a really goofy episode completely different to the tone of the show and adds nothing to the plot, and the other one is just a little mission the 104th cadets go through when they were going through training, this one is still at least in tone with the show so if you wanted to check it out you can! edit: annie’s ova has a spoiler that isn’t revealed to s3P2 so it should be watched any time after that.

I REALLY hope they see this comment! It's best to watch S2E1, then the Ilse's Notebook OVA, and THEN S2E2 and the rest of the season after. Otherwise they'll encounter somewhat of a spoiler

That was the most important OVA because it added depth to Levi's (and Erwin's alongside) character and established that the underground city exits. In my opinion, the other OVAs- you can just straight up skip or watch as bonus episodes after finishing the whole series. Some spoil some things, some are kinda fillers so it's just better to proceed with normal seasons to avoid any confusion. Anyway, that was a great reaction guys:)

It's been so long since I watched these. First time I watched them I loved Levi's character a LOT more. At the beginning I thought he was just a stick in the mud and couldn't understand why people were so hyped about him, but after these OVAs I understood his character more and had a lot more respect for him. Knowing he's a germaphobe, things in season 1 makes me view him in a new light - like when he grabs a squad members bloody hand and tells him he'll carry on his burden of rage for humanity. It makes me think he's incredibly compassionate, even if he comes off as apathetic.

You are right. I doubt the guys will remember names so it would be fine. But my only reason to skip it is because a certain character will 'say' something in Season 2 which will give them quite a shock because imagine how haunting it was watching the episode when that character was approached by it and it can do that. Imagine how shock the guys will be when it happens

I heard Mason ask about the Omni-directional gear and if it was different from the 3D maneuver gear. They are the same thing. This is just a matter of different people translating the same thing differently. The same goes for the abnormal and aberrant titans. They're the same thing. Abnormals/aberrants are just titans that behave differently from normal titans. There are no humans inside of them.

After you finish season two please react to the Lost Girls ovas focusing on Annie and Mikasa. Some are saying to wait until s3 but Annie's ovas are fine, they were released before s3 and I find them just as well done as Levis ovas- so watching those after s2 would be perfect. Mikasa’s contain spoilers unless watched after S3P1.
