I'll definitely be talking about Inside in my Game Maker's Playlist video for July, but I couldn't wait a whole month to recommend this game to you all.

It's a brilliant puzzle platformer from the guys and gals behind Limbo. It's a lot like Limbo, actually, but even better and more sophisticated. It has terrific animation (some of the best ever), a haunting vibe, and a real dedication to minimalism. This is a game that does a lot with a little.

It does a great job of telling you about its world, and exploring its themes, through the gameplay itself. Which is always good. And it likes to subvert your expectations, and surprise you. This is a game where I played large sections with my mouth open in amazement and shock.

There are some fantastic set pieces that will stick in my mind forever, and it's an altogether gorgeous game. Many scenes would make brilliant wallpapers.

It's out now on Xbox One and will hit Steam on July 7th. No word on a PS4 version, yet. Whatever your system of choice, don't miss this one. It's going to be on a lot of Game of the Year lists come December.

Going to pick it up when it hits Steam, thanks for the recommendation!

Really wish it were coming to PS4 sometime soon, but it appears to be an exclusive or at least a timed exclusive

I think Arnt Jensen, the silent, introverted creator of Limbo and Inside, is the next Eric Chahi. Each one of his games gets closer and closer to the vibe of Another World. I haven't played it yet (PC user), but Inside looks even closer to Another World than Limbo. It's interesting and ironic how Eric Chahi couldn't replicate the drama, loneliness, fear and minimalism in his cinematic puzzle platformer Another World (1990) with his next game, Heart Of Darkness (1998), which coincidentally is about a vulnerable little boy that dies in terrible ways. I think he couldn't replicate it largely because he followed his instincts when he made Another World and then couldn't force himself to consciously repeat the same motions. Some Kickstarter indie games deliberately tried to recapture the feeling of Another World ('The Way' and the upcoming 'Candle') and ended up doing something quite different. The closest hits were Ico and Brothers, because of the "silent film" style, and the companion that you care about. I'm aware Limbo and Inside are a group effort (the puzzles are designed by another genius), but certain genres, I think, need an 'auteur' more than others. You can't make a truly memorable adventure game or action-adventure game, if you're not putting your unique soul into it. So yeah. Jensen, the silent creator of a silent game.

Nicely written, well put! Jensen is definitely a guy to keep an eye on. Speaking of Brothers, I can't wait to see what those guys get up to next, also.

The sheer sense of atmosphere this created was quite extraordinary -- and so much more powerful than apparently more realistic-looking games.
