Hello everyone!

I'm coming to you from a very hot summer evening in the UK to share some thoughts on GMTK, and some plans for the future.

I outline them in the video above - which, I should warn you, is... not great. My lav mic is popping constantly so the audio is bad. I keep going out of focus. You can see my fiance's dress hanging up behind me. A light stops working halfway though.

You'll understand why the video is so bad when you watch it! I would re-record it but it's so hot under the studio lights and also - as embarrassing as it is - I quite like showing my amateur first steps in vlogging.

But if you don't want to watch and just want the TL;DR, here we go:

- After reaching 1 million subscribers on GMTK, I've lost some of my satisfaction with the channel as I no longer feel like I'm learning new skills or striving for new challenges.

- So while I will continue with the GMTK content you know, I want to try three new things that will take me out of my comfort zone.

- One is On the Level, which I've already started. Interviewing people is scary and the format feels completely new and fresh. It's like starting a whole new channel.

- Two is a series where I try to make a game, and document the entire process. I'll be on camera to match the idea of being transparent and open about the process.

- Three is to possibly relaunch Design Icons as a podcast. Not 100% sure about that - I'll need to do a test episode I think.

- The main takeaway is: I'm taking some time off currently for my wedding and honeymoon. So, I will likely not be making any videos in August and so won't charge Patrons. After that I'll need a bit of time and patience while I try new projects and creative endeavours. Please bear with me!

- Also the lav mic was too close to my mouth, I need to use Manual Focus, and the light ran out of battery. Learning!!

Cheers

Mark

So down for a podcast!!! And hope you enjoy your wedding/honeymoon; enjoy the well deserved break!

Design Icons seems like the perfect candidate for the podcast format. Great idea!

Calliope Rannis

Ooh, I hope you have a lovely wedding! I myself *love* the On The Level series, it feels like a natural evolution of the Boss Keys format to me. I will very happily watch any and all episodes in that format! ^w^

You do amazing work, and I can't wait to see where you go from here. Congratulations on the upcoming wedding, have a wonderful honeymoon, and we will see you when you get back!

Edward Earl Newton

Definitely enjoy your break. Also -> are you shooting with tungsten or fluorescent lights? Or LCD? Tungsten/incandescent is the only one I know of that gets really hot - the others are much more conducive to shooting. :)

GameMakersToolkit

The light that turned off was a little LED - ran out of batteries but was very hot (like an iPhone heating up)

Mustafa Haddara

Congrats on the wedding and I totally get the need to push yourself outside of your comfort zone! I really look forward to the “let’s make a game” series, that sounds really fun!

Nice! Change is good. And interested in a podcast! Hope the wedding goes amazingly and you have a nice honeymoon!

Brian M

Congratulations on big life events and full support on continued learning 👍🏻

Thanks for updating. I enjoy the more in-depth and perhaps more nieche subjects you‘ve done recently and also thought that podcasts might be an interesting format. Perhaps board games are something you could talk more about without video, since they are probably harder to visualize but have much potential and they are so different to video games. I would be very interested in that.

This is definitely awesome Mark! I think they're great ideas and should give you that room to keep pushing for new and exciting things. Also, congrats on the wedding!!

Anonymous

Really cool to see you on camera like this and excited for exciting new stuff! Excite!

Anonymous

Yes! I have been afraid you were dropping Design Icons for a long time and the chance of it being converted into a podcast makes so much sense. Would love that!! Also really nice to see you rambling for a change. I like that you did not edit out all the quirkiness :) thanks for being transparent and enjoy your wedding

Anonymous

This sounds like an exciting new era for GMTK and I look forward to seeing what you do next. Also, good luck with the wedding. Marriage is a great thing. Also, I think I have a really good name for your series that talks people through the tools you need to make a game.

jt

Good luck with your wedding! Super excited (and inspired!) about you trying these new things, especially watching you develop a game on your own!

ZoidbergForPresident

Cool! May you have all the fun you seek! And then some more! ;)

I really liked the Design Icons videos, and I had no idea they weren't doing well on YT. But I would absolutely be interested in it as a podcast if you think that will work better. I would also love to see a series where you make a game yourself. Whatever you end up doing next, I am looking forward to it. Congrats on getting married and enjoy your time off!!

Dave Pickett

Thanks for the update! Excited to see where you go next. Yay learning!

Dave Pickett

Also wanted to say that I have no problems being charged here in months when you don't put out a new video. I view this as an ongoing investment in your entire process, not specifically for the videos that happen to be completed in a given month.

Congrats with your wedding and honeymoon, and i look forward to your new projects. I really enjoy all your content, it is truly something i look forward to, and something that haven't disappointed 😊

Anonymous

I liked the ramble! All makes sense, and excited for the experiments too!

Full honesty tho I love the GMTK episodes the most, it’s a good day when I get a Patreon email or YouTube notification. Perhaps you could branch out into covering the various Video Game technologies, as well as the design element? That would still technically fit with the brief…

Anonymous

Hi Mark, I just want to say that I greatly appreciate both how self-reflective you are and that you are comfortable enough to share that analysis with us. I think your willingness to reflect on your goals, what stimulates you, and where you see yourself going is one of the reasons you've had so much success - a fantastic YouTube channel, a research article, keynote speeches, consulting, etc. If after all this time and thought you believe that you need to go in these new directions, then go for it. I'm not a big podcast guy, but I'm sure those episodes will be top notch just like everything else you do, and I'll continue to eagerly await emails from Patreon with your new content, regardless of what form it takes. Enjoy your wedding and honeymoon!

As a big fan, I think whenever you do something new or different it ends up being one of my favourite one of your projects. Like designing for disability was an incredible thing that has reach beyond video games, and boss keys was a monstrous and incredibly executed project. And a journalistic style podcast for design icons sounds perfect!

Anonymous

Thank you for posting. This is the kind of content I really love seeing as a patron.

Making a game is a great idea. I will, however, ask you to be wary of filming that process. It will be an awful lot of unnecessary pressure. Failure is a natural part of game development, documenting that could be really painful.

Andrew Crosswait

I watched them all but the design icon vids definitely weren't my favorites. I think I prefer to learn about modern design principles. That being said - if you made a podcast I'd listen to every episode regardless lol. Your voice is lovely to listen to.

Andrew Crosswait

Might I also suggest you do some kind of community-involvement for your game dev series? I'm still a budding game developer, and I'd love for my favorite channel to help motivate me along with my own game. Maybe it could be a patron exclusive thing, every time you put out a video on your game dev journey you put out a poll or something here seeing how far other people have made it, or do something similar on your discord maybe.

Anonymous

You're a brave man Mark, making a game series is a big undertaking. I have never seen a video series of making a game that ended with a full game(but I didn't look for it too much ;)). I strongly agree with what Andrew said, that community involvment would be good way to go. I'm very much looking forward to what you will be able to achieve and I will be glad to help if the help will be needed.

I absolutely love the idea of making a game series, I'm really excited to see where this goes! I've always wanted to get into game making but it has always seemed too intimidating and I feel like this would be a great way for me to actually start by following along. I am also a big podcast enjoyer, so converting the design series to podcast sounds very cool. All in all I can't wait to see where your channel goes next, after some well deserved time off! Congratulations on your coming wedding and have a lovely (as much as possible in the circumstances) honeymoon!

Johan Agstam

I've enjoyed "on the level" a lot, looking forward to more of that. Podcast isn't my thing but I might try it out as I really liked design icons. The try making a game one could be interesting as well. Regardless I applaud you expanding in directions you feel will be good for you.

Blackreach

Congrats on your wedding! Change is law and you seem to be embracing it. Excited about the new content!

Enjoy the summer with your loved ones! :)

Hi Mark! Keep doing the things your interested in for sure. two quick thoughts: 1. if you're doing a podcast, I find them better if they are time based or episodic, for static content you could try Netflix...!?!! maybe? for a stand alone series like the games history stuff.... or radio4 even? (also check out my podcast 🤪 www.machine-ethics.net). 2. could try working with other games designers might be a good step instead of "making your own game" as youtube etc already has LOTS of making a game stuff so you might be better served to utilisie the skills and knowledge you have instead of wholesale learning a new skill / software... (also as a coder I worry that you might accidently produce bad advice, in terms of how to code and technical topics without going really deep on them 🧐)

Anonymous

I really enjoyed this vlog!) thank you)) it was such an unusuall setting for you and with you not feeling comfortable you did really well! And i'm not saying it out of pity - this video was honest and authentic with its own charm :)

All my support, Mark. Take your time to rest and charge batteries!

Will Kommor

You're allowed to leave your glasses on when filming yourself my dude 🤓

Congrats on the wedding, Mark! As a subscriber for almost 4 years at this point, I have really enjoy seeing the growth of your channel (growth in the sense of evolution, though 1M+ subs is nothing to scoff at!). I like I how you constantly strive to improve your content and try new things. Personally, I'd love to see more content in the "Design Icons" series, I found it good fun. Also, I know you mentioned wanting to get out of your comfort zone and experiment with new ideas but... Boss Keys season 3? :)

GameMakersToolkit

Cheers! Boss Keys will definitely return for new games in the style, like Hollow Knight Silksong, Breath of the Wild 2, and Metroid Dread :D

Sam Ervin

I'd love a podcast on anything gaming you want to talk about. Many episodes of GMTK are great with only audio, and many more would work with just a little more narration or explanation, so I know you already have the voice for it.

Anonymous

Congrats for getting out of your comfort zone! I'm well up for podcasts and seeing your journey through making a game. Very brave too to say when things are getting comfortable!

Anonymous

A podcast sounds awesome! I love all the design icons and gaming history in general, so I'd listen the hell out of a podcast centered around it. Though to be fair I'd probably listen to any GMTK podcast :P

Anonymous

1. podcast would be a good thing. I admit I'm mostly consuming stuff in audio form these days and even to some GMTK videos I listen to instead of watching. So, at least in my case, some of the effort you put into editing a video goes to waste; 2. as some other patrons mentioned, there's already plenty of video game tutorials online. I'd be very interested in this sort of episodic experiment 'game critic tries to make a game' thing that where we would see you doing things differently than others, also sometimes failing or learning about your own limitations (and in the end utilizing them as your strengths?) anyway, good luck in all your endeavors.

Anonymous

I think that one of the benefits of having 1M subs is that you can do whatever you want and you will still have a strong fan base, don't be afraid to post whatever u want

OSW Review

Yo! As a full-time YouTuber, I applaud your decision to always strive to keep yourself creatively engaged. I am thrilled to hear design icons will return in some fashion. If you're unhappy with it's performance on the channel, consider 1) having it as a patreon perk, and 2) outsourcing the video portion. Your voice and thoughts are the driving factor behind it's success, even though your visual style is so slick. Anywoo, appreciate the transparency and best of luck to you in all your ventures!

Anonymous

If game making is the next step here (which I fully support, at the beginning when you started talking about challenge I hoped that’s where you were going), it would be cool if you reached out to Yahtzee Croshaw of the Escapist, who’s done a really engaging series called Dev Diary, now in its second season. Your styles are quite different but I think he would have a lot to offer in terms of how to present topics and structure such a series. Good luck Mark!

Anonymous

I really enjoy the design icons series, one of my favorite kind of videos. The interviews and level design analysis is great, but may be subjectively interesting depending if it's a game people like in particular. About seeing you on camera, I can't say that I prefer it. I suppose I'm old school, but I rather see gameplay related to the topic being talked instead of seeing people's emotions and reactions.

Anonymous

The whole IRL video setup you have here is already way better than like 99% of Youtubers and streamers. The lighting seems good, the background is pleasant, The camera quality is very good and the audio sounds completely fine.

Anonymous

Thanks a lot Mark for share your thoughts about the channel. And also, congratulations about your weeding and honeymoon! Enjoy it as long as you need, your suscribers will be there whenever you return and you deserve some holidays. Regarding your ideas for the channel, I vote for keeping the Design Icons series as Youtube videos. I love them, they are very proffesional, the content is nice, and they show things I never knew before about the game's history. I think a podcast would be more difficult to understand because the explanations of game mechanics work better visually, and it's better to see old games than to hear about them. It's a pity the series is not as popular as other videos, but I'm a strong fan of them. Maybe you could do fewer videos than you thought, but I would like to see the series reaching an end. About the other ideas you have perfect, I'm ok if you're ok. I prefer essays like the GMTK videos rather than streamers or people talking for 1-2h, but I'll be there anyway. Thanks again and enjoy!

I'd absolutely love to have Design Icons as a podcast!
