Hello!

Unbelievably, I hit 2000 Patrons yesterday. 2000 people who are so generous to support me on my silly self-indulgent mission to go way too in-depth on design and dungeons and Donkey Kong. I can’t thank you enough.

I love doing these videos. I thought I’d be bored and burnt out by now, but more than two years later and I am still enjoying the process, thrilled to put out a new video, and bursting with excitement for what I’m going to do next.

I’ve also really enjoyed talking to you all. GameClub has become one of my favourite things, for example, as it always produces really thoughtful discussion of the game at hand. And I'm looking forward to the Game Jam, too.

Anyway! To celebrate the milestone, I’ve decided to change my Patreon page from “per-video” to “per-month”. That means no matter how many videos I make in a month, you only pay once.

For you, this will mean a discount for the months where I release two videos, and more certainty over your payments. For me, this lets off a little pressure and makes things like multi-part videos, spin-off shows like Boss Keys, bonus episodes, shorter episodes, and whatnot, easier to deal with.

The only downsides to the change would be:

A) This removes my incentive to make episodes of GMTK really fast. But I hope you’ll know by now that I have always favoured quality over quantity - but still have a faster release schedule than most video essayists.

B) What if I don’t release any videos in a month? Well, that has literally never happened in the history of GMTK, but I would of course not charge for that month if that somehow ended up happening. Like, because of a zombie apocalypse or something.

But yeah, this is the nice thing about buying in bulk, I guess. Everyone pays a little less! I don’t need this much money, it’s a ridiculous amount (though, I thank you for every last cent), so let’s make it a tiny bit more sensible.

Anyway - other updates: the Game Jam has an absurd number of sign-ups and now I’m terrified of the prospect of judging all these games. I’ve been wrangling with an script for ages now but I’m looking forward to recording that today. And then it’s back to Boss Keys as I’m starting to get those “whatever happened to Boss Keys!?” tweets.

Oh, and I’d like to do another Q&A (maybe as a stream, while I play some video games?) to celebrate 2000, but please lemme delay that a bit as I want to get this video done before starting anything else!

For the Game Jam I'd suggest setting up a JIRA Cloud instance with the following free plugin: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.atlassian.cloud.hackathon/cloud/overview Which should help streamline the process of both building teams and judging the results of the Game Jam Also I'm sure you could get a unlimited license due to your content being or educational nature ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Looks like it's time to increase my donation amount :) Seriously love your videos. Everytime a new one is released, I watch it as soon as possible. Easily my favourite video series on youtube, and I hope you keep making these videos for a long time to come.

Congrats and thank you! Your change in pricing reflects your honesty and integrity - thanks for being an awesome person and an incredible content creator. Looking forward to what’s next

Congratulations, Mark! Thanks for the honesty and for giving up revenue, even though you could afford not to. If your plan included getting a less "ridiculous amount", I'm sorry to say I'm about to bump up my contribution. No hard feelings, eh? :)

Congrats Mark! Glad to be apart of this community. The Game of the Month Club has incentivized me to play games I would've likely not looked at before, and has been a great addition for me. Knowing well that my bank won't explode over you releasing multiple videos in a month will absolutely make it easier for us to decide to up our backing or not! Thank you!

2 days after I sign up and this happens, why's Mark so awesome?

Congratulations on the huge milestone! And thanks for the discount, but your content is worth every penny, and I'm going to up my contribution to match. I've been paying bout $10/mo for your two monthly videos, and there's no reason why I shouldn't keep paying it. Your insights are worth it!
