David Lynch confirmed that George Lucas offered him Return of the Jedi and he turned it down: https://youtu.be/EJQ4vCu-S0U?si=orIEFsljoNmmMBep It makes sense actually: Lucas had quit all the guilds after the DGA tried to force him to give Irvin Kershner a directing credit at the start of Empire Strikes Back, instead of only at the end. So when Jedi came around, he needed a non-union director, which is why he was talking to the Lynches and Cronenbergs of the world, and why he ultimately gave it to a mid-tier British director. Had Lucas not quit the guild, Spielberg said he would have directed Return of the Jedi.
