You guys do a great job of choosing the old movies that have contemporary pacing. Highly recommend “A Face in the Crowd” as another older one with contemporary themes. Andy Griffith is amazing in it.

Mayella is sexually and physically abused by her father and is just as much a victim. Especially being of the time, a woman would need to "know her place" almost as much as a black man. Did she lie about Tom? Sure, but she is being coerced by this ongoing brutality. She may not be a good person, but she is definitely a victim. I think she almost admits the truth but then you can see in real time how she changed her mind during the testimony as she is likely remembering what her father will do to her if she steps out of line.

I do believe having this be a book you read as a kid makes it hit less when you're that age. I didn't fully grasp this story and reckon with it until I reread it as an adult. I love it now, but when I was in high school I hated school work so I just read it super fast and didn't take it in at all the first time.

Was having issues with audio on a lot of your reaction vids. It seemed way too boosted, George's mouse clicks were super audible and I couldn't see any other comments about it. Anyway, I noticed that watching on YouTube itself didn't have this and that's where I noticed the embedded player on Patreon had Stable Volume turned on, which is like some kind of compressor. So if anyone else is fussy with audio or has click misophonia, try disabling Stable Volume.

I think the Ewell mom died, so now asshole Bob wastes his time being drunk all the time, so Mayella is forced to be the "mom" for her younger siblings. Although it's implied her dad might be sexually abusive. So, regardless of her age, she's kind of stuck taking care of the kids since her drunken abusive dad isn't going to. And I think her testimony is a mix of what George said, being out of fear for her dad, and the inherent racism in the county, like when she lashed out at the end toward Atticus for his nice mannerisms which she mistook for him thinking he's better than her. That part is deflection. She probably had similar angry feelings toward Tom, but not as much as Bob did.

(I'm traveling so please indulge me if my comments are redundant...) This is a great movie with Gregory Peck based on a best-selling novel with a theme of Social Justice in 1963... Not right away, but definitely come back to seeing another great movie with Gregory Peck based on a best-selling novel with a theme of Social Justice in 1947: A Gentleman's Agreement

I'm sure that someone posted this, but on the off chance that nobody did... The character Dill Harris was based on an actual childhood friend of Harper Lee who grew up to be Truman Capote. Truman Capote also became a writer, most famously of "In Cold Blood" which is another movie you guys should see – the original with Robert Blake, that is. And, of course, Truman Capote was played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film "Capote" for which he won his Best Lead Actor Oscar. British actor Toby Jones also played Truman Capote in "Infamous" for which he won a London Critics Circle Film Awards for British Actor of the Year.

Get your tissues, Simone (and me)! Gregory Peck remained friends with Brock Peters (Tom Robinson) for the rest of his life, and when Peck passed, Peters gave the eulogy at his funeral. Also love hearing Mary Badham talking about Peck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZUxFIOsG4k So cute. https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/ggm90e/1962_gregory_peck_and_mary_badham_on_the_set_of/

To Kill A Mockingbird is still on Broadway. Atticus is currently played by Greg Kinnear, who took over in 2022 for Ed Harris, who took over for Jeff Daniels in 2019. The touring production starred Richard Thomas, who has been in a ton of things, especially The Waltons, an old, popular TV drama, that was used for a long time as a stand-in for a peaceful, happy, family. Like people would say "this isn't the Waltons" to mean everything isn't perfect here, and don't expect it to be. Anyway, it's fun to look them up and see them all in the same tan suit on stage. They all kind of look like each other when dressed that way.
