Simon Pegged Me

George: Is it cheating? Yes, it is. It is a monogamous relationship. Before moving on to the next sexual partner, there needs to be some form of a dissolution beyond the figurative. A divorce would be nice, but not necessary. Any form of communication between the two that the emotional and sexual foundation of the relationship is over and that in the future, they are free to seek comfort and connection with other people is enough. I don’t think Skyler had made that clear to Walt: his reaction to the confession confirmed that. More to the point, she knows she’s cheating. This is Skyler crossing the Rubicon. Before now, she’s been wrestling with the issue that seems to be at the heart of recent episodes for all the characters: In telling my story, am I the bad guy or the good guy? Skyler is making a conscious decision to become a bad person. Regarding the decision to re-hire Jesse, it is definitely manipulation. His narcissism won’t let him admit it, but Walt is intimidated by Gale, Gale’s credentials, and his prowess in the lab. Deep down, he knows Gus hasn’t assigned Gale to him as an assistant; Gus has tasked him with training his replacement. Gale had to go. Walt can pretend Gale has to go to save Hank, to help Jesse, but he’s really doing this to maintain his position at the center of his life’s story, to be the hero he never was when he was a high school chemistry teacher, living on the periphery of everyone else’s story. He can only do that as a “bad person.” I don’t know if he can ever let that truth about himself come to light.

Thanks for doing these recaps of the series. I don’t think I could watch the actual show. It’s not my thing.

I say that as I wrestle with the decision to watch Better Call Saul. That character does appeal to me.

Since you're seeing these kinds of psychological and relationship depths in edited-down versions of Breaking Bad, I would 100% recommend watching Better Call Saul in full after you finish this show. One of the best "character-studies" in any medium I've ever seen. It takes its time, but very much worth it, in my opinion.

George: "I'll take whatevers in that greasy bag... whatevers making that bag so greasy has got to be so freaking amazing." ME TOO!!! That's the universal sign of FLAVOR!!! (most of the time at least).
