I love this movie. I was not that into Cloverfield, but when this movie came out, I loved the idea of having a semi-shared universe in which you can tell multiple genres of movie. It should never be looked at as a sequel, but they were trying to build a world where any type of story can be told. The first one is a found-footage kaiju movie. The second is an abduction film. The third is a space horror film. Maybe the fourth could be a romcom. I don't think they communicated well what they were trying to do, and anyone expecting a direct beat-for-beat sequel will be disappointed.

I think it kind of makes an interesting foil to the first movie. The first movie is sort of "What if you get trapped in a disaster with the ideal companions (your friends)?" and the second is "What if you get trapped with the worst possible person?". Also the Slusho! connection between the films. I believe you see ads for this product in both movies (and pretty sure it shows up in the 3rd also).
