Rocky 3 - Patreon Version

Theoshin

iam am so happy, but will cry today because of this movie

Young Blood Priest

Damn it! Max is trippin’ and won’t play the movie! 🤬

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

RIP to the amazing Carl Weathers, this movie especially one of his best performances. The Eye of The Tiger wasn’t even planned initially to be used but ended up being written for the film and is one of the best movie songs out there. Glad y’all got onto this one because it’s a good sequel for sure!

Tay Schumaker

3 on is where the Rocky movies start to get a bit silly but still love them. There are some genuinely great speeches and moments in all of the movies, even as they get a bit camp and silly. Just embrace it and enjoy

JayF

Yeah this one is tough emotionally but very good. I was about to say that IV is more of a "of its time" plot but it seems to have unfortunately become relevant again (you'll see).

Young Blood Priest

George, Mr. T was a body guard and was in a competition called (I believe) toughest bodyguard or bouncer, something like that. A competition he won. From what I understand, based off that show, he was invited to audition for the movie. The original choice for Clubber was former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier. Unfortunately, Frazier couldn’t read very well, if at all, so Mr. T got the roll.

FWPJR.

Yes, finally another Rocky reaction. Been waiting for this. I’m so happy now

Shawnie

Well... guess who's having a Rocky 1,2,3-athon hungover tomorrow. Editing together the Patreon version now haha

Moni Castaneda

Yaaay continuing the series!! You should do something like " Sequel Sundays'

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I think memes have, in some form or another, existed as long as we've had language. Back in WW2 there was "Kilroy was here", there are graffiti on walls in ancient Roman towns and cities, but in the 80s "I pity the fool!" was heard everywhere. Mr. T was a thing, had his own Saturday morning cartoon, there was a Mr. T cereal, I swear.

Tay Schumaker

This was before professional wrestling was widely known as scripted and performative. So in this they’re playing it straight as if it’s still a genuine competition. But he’s just playing a classic territory heel, and they do acknowledge it a bit Also the WWF turned into the WWE in 2002 after a legal dispute with the world wildlife fund

Young Blood Priest

George, hitting someone in the back of the head is a rabbit punch. Also, the artist of the painting at the end of the movie was the announcer of the fight with Hulk Hogan. The dude with the long mustache.

Chris B

My thoughts regarding tabloids: 1) Nowadays, like any other magazine, it's not only in print but also online, so the costs (e.g. for paparazzi pics) splits between the two, and revenue is also made by online ads 2) Tabloids themselves usually have a ton of printed ads, so it's not only the sale revenue (although, yes - if sales go down, the worth of ads goes down). 3) Tabloids would usually be owned by larger media companies so might be worth keeping around to also fuel the sale of other mags 4) Yeah, I think young people don't buy them that much but people who grew up with them (in some social circles) would be so used to getting them, they don't really mind that the "news" is not about e.g. Julia Roberts but about Zendeya, they just enjoy the gossip aspect.

Odd Thomas

We need Stallone in 'Cliffhanger'. Classic 90s actioner.

ChickensAreRacist

Fair point on the magazines. I have to assume they’re still around due to waiting rooms being around. Cuz yeah I’ve not seen anyone have one in their home in years.

Ihor Krasman

Great reaction, hope you'll proceed with part 4, the last essential to start Creed series which is awesome and totally worth react

John

Creed is an amazing series and I hope you continue with the Rocky series and the Creed franchise. As it relates to tabloids, I think they were never a money maker for supermarkets, they serve two purposes to distract people from the wait at the checkout line (checkout) and to facilitate impulse buys at the register. You see the tabloid right next to the snickers.

Nathan Jasper

This is a nice surprise! I hope you'll continue the series. Parts 4 and 6 are just as amazing as the first three. Then of course the Creed Trilogy is essential after that :)

Spacecat44

I think you have to have to have some sort of state or federally issued "Crazy Aunt" license to legally buy tabloids these days

Jihad Lee

There is no tomorrow

simon brouillard

Awesome, looking forward to the other Rockys/Creed, including 5. A rabbit punch is s punch behind the head and octogenarian 🤪

REDR58

All about Mr T. (Well, mostly the cartoon) in under 15 minutes: https://youtu.be/QAYX3A8Aw2s?si=UVVF1ODDX3gkzZFC

Logan Kerlee

:) I was expecting to not enjoy this one - but nope!! lol, you guys made this a very fun watch and I'm grateful. Thanks, you two!

REDR58

Other than People magazine or the like, I’ve never seen a tabloids such as The National Enquirer or the like outside of a newsstand or supermarket checkout rack. I don’t think I’ve ever even touched one and I was born in the 1970s.

Growing up my family used to get The Sun tabloid, probably the worst of all tabloids. I used to like it for the Page 3 and the comic strips of course, but as I got older I started to get in to print media so I started to collect them. I had a huge tower of different tabloids and I would study them as I learnt about media at School and eventually college. One of the first things I noticed was the "exclusive" tag being used all over the place. What was "exclusive" on page 1 in one paper was sometimes on page 5 of another a few days earlier. The other was the paparazzi and the lengths they would go to. At college I did essay when I joined on the different coverage of Princess Dianas death and it was the most soul crushing thing I ever did. The anger I had that these so called Newspapers would pass off such trash as news and get away with it made me eventually take the tower, put them in a burner and get rid of the whole lot. When I began my course properly I focused on film, but there were modules on print media so we would look newspapers and again I got so angry with some of the stories. The one that really annoyed me was Natalie Portman who was shot on a private beach topless with a telescopic lens by some asshole and it was all over the tabloids. This was after Leon when she was only 16. I remember an excuse that european media showed the image so it was already in the public eye so they had a right to use it and 16 is the age of consent in the UK so they weren't doing anything morally wrong. Tha they have to justify that they aren't wrong on technicalities means it's wrong. It's not surprising years later that front page in The Sun was the announcement that Emma Watson was now "legal" when she turned 16. All it proved is that they were perving over her before hand. Absolutely disgusting. It also says alot about their readers...

For ROCKY IV, you might need to do a poll, or check the comments, which version to watch, because there is the original released version from 1985, but Stallone released a Director's Cut version in 2021 called ROCKY VS DRAGO.

akaTheBARON

🖤In reference to George asking who had the most unboxeriest name ever I found some pretty bad names that some boxers actually used: Vaughn “Shake and Bake” Bean Michael “Double M” Moorer James “The Fighting Cowboy” Tillis Chuck “The Bayonne Bleeder” Wepner Donnell “The Real Touch of Sleep” Holmes Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson Jerry “Wimpy” Halstead Lance “Goofi” Whitaker Scott “The Pink Cat” Walker Joel “Love Child” Julio Anthony “Sugar Ray Clay Jones Jr.” Small (such a mouth full for a nickname LOL) Honorable mention to Eric “Butterbean” Esch or just "Butterbean." You two have seen him in one of the Jackass movies (the first one I believe). He's the boxer Johnny Knoxville boxed in that store where he absolutely got his ass whooped. By all rights his name should go on the worst names list but he's actually a very sweet man so when you hear the name "Butterbean" you actually don't even notice how weird of a name it is, you just think of what a nice man he is.

RoadZombie

Can't wait for y'all to see Rocky IV

MD Simmons

Gmails Notification Sent this to me as Rock 3. I assumed it was some obscure indie film I’ve never heard about.

akaTheBARON

🖤But weird boxing names aside (chants) Ro-cky IV! Ro-cky IV! Ro-cky IV! Ro-cky IV! ... Rocky IV is pretty good too. I'm not sure if this is a popular opinion or if I'm in the minority but it's my favorite Rocky movie. It's the one I saw the most as a kid so maybe just nostalgia I guess. "Rocky Balboa" (which is Rocky 6) is good too. Unfortunately, Rocky 5 is the black sheep of the Rocky films. But not near as bad as a lot of people make it out to be IMO. It's just not the strongest of the bunch. But should you decide to watch the rest of the Rocky films and eventually the "Creed" spin-off films, Rocky 5 is just along for the ride I guess. ... but with any movie franchise you two take on, it's one movie at at a time. So I'll leave it with: (chants) Ro-cky IV! Ro-cky IV! Ro-cky IV! Ro-cky IV! ... XD

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

As a younger fan of the franchise, the 80s cheese of IV never felt appropriate to me despite it having among the most iconic moments of the series. And don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for 80s cheese but considering Rocky started out as a grounded 70s indie drama it feels like a ‘shark jumping’ point for the series. I haven’t seen the new cut yet but from what I’ve read and seen discussed it looks like something more fitting for the series.

Jay Davis

Yo, Adrian. They're back.

Meth Damon

I like how John Lithgow was often the bad guy but IRL he seems very nice.

Lyle Morgan

After Rocky IV, you can skip ahead to Creed. Rocky V and Rocky Balboa are awful (with the exception of Rocky's speech to his son in the street).

Chase Lonnergan

If ANY media that I want to consume is available as physical media, ESPECIALLY books, I will buy it in its physical form. Why? Because digital service purchases, especially anything on Kindle, can be removed by the media service at any time, for any reason, without refund. This happened to me once. I "purchased" a book on Kindle, and when the author decided that they didn't like the way Amazon was treating authors and underpaying them, he went to a different company, and Amazon deleted the book from their servers. My copy of the book no longer existed and I had to buy it again on the new service he went to. I recommend physical media to everyone, for everything. It's the only way to guarantee that when you buy something, you get to keep it. That includes magazines, movies, music, and books. Digital is bullshit. Especially if the government gets involved. P.S... A rabbit punch is when you hit a boxer in the back of his head.

Partheeban Senthilnathan

The YouTube title card is great 😂😂. Why wasn’t George’s face on the picture in the right. A laughed for a full minute at the picture of rocky simone running 😂

Joe Lazarus

Can't wait for Rocky IV, 5 and Rocky Balboa!!! Let the journey continue with these lovable characters!!

John

That is a good idea. I think the Director's cut is the better version though it is longer

JokerDanny

Mr T. was a bouncer and he had a boxing fight before acting, he also was a professional wrestler for a short time.

REDR58

In the middle of the reaction but one of my favorite parts of these movies is seeing how much the skyline of Philadelphia changes from film to film. It’s almost unrecognizable today as it looked in the first movie. City Hall was opposite the large staircase of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Today, a number of skyscrapers dwarf City Hall.

Jared Winn

Life long wrestling fan/one time independent wrestler here. The match is so funny because it’s structured just like a real one. The bad guy gets the crowd riled up and beats up the good guy until the good guy comes from behind and beats the bad guy. The funny thing is (in this movies universe) Rocky isn’t in on it, so he was ACTUALLY fighting for his life. Didn’t want to let the kids in the theaters know it is fake, I guess. The 80s weren’t ready for that convo yet lmao

REDR58

A few things about the Rocky statue, it was originally commissioned by Stallone for use in this movie. He then gifted it to the city of Philadelphia. There was some debate over the years of whether or not the statue belonged in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, because some people thought it was inappropriate to have a statue like that in front of such a prestigious institution as the museum. The statue was moved around a few times over the years, and eventually ended back up at the foot of the museum stairs to one side, no longer at the top of the stairs. Here’s the website of the artist who made the statue: https://www.rockystatue.com/the-statue

Khan1001

This is my favorite one!, loved the reaction, please watch Rocky 4 ASAP, its also great however Rocky 5 was a big misfire, well documented. I would recommended skipping it & and going straight to Rocky Balboa 2006.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Sylvester Stallone is, not surprisingly I suppose, a huge boxing fan, still is, and he definitely took a lot of inspiration from real fighters and real fights. In this, his strategy to beat Clubber is absolutely inspired by the Rumble in the Jungle, I'm sure of it. That was Muhammad Ali challenging George Foreman in Kinshasa, in 1974. WHEN WE WERE KINGS is a fantastic documentary about that fight and the whole spectacle and the politics surrounding it, highly recommend if you haven't seen it, even if you don't like boxing it's a supremely well made documentary and a captivating true story, with a really cool soundtrack to boot. Anyway, Foreman at the time was undefeated and had demolished two fighters that the aging Ali had struggled against, everyone thought Foreman, basically a giant, was literally going to KILL Ali because Ali would never give up. Well watch the documentary, but basically what Rocky did was Ali's strategy, talk shit, get him so pissed off he throws everything at you, take the hits and somehow survive until he tires himself out. And you just have to see and hear Ali being himself, he was something else man, never another like that.

Martin Nicholls

I think 3 might be my favourite - a lot of people like 4 more, but that's for another time.. The first Rocky is legendary tier for coming out of nowhere and all the story attached to it, but I think 3 as a movie is better executed and the boxing itself is more solid. Rabbit punch is a punch on the back of the head btw - they're really specifically dangerous in any scenario and definitely outside of Queensberry Rules. Quite a lot of this movie is really about sports psychology without really saying it, these days somebody at that tier of boxing would have a whole sports psychology team, Rock gets Adrian screaming at him on a beach, effective, I guess, and definitely cheaper. Mr T still most known for the A-Team of course :)

Martin Nicholls

5 is a complicated problem. For rewatch value it is poor, but it contains story moments that come back later. I don't think it is *required* viewing but also I think things that happen later don't work like they're meant to without seeing 5.

Tinfoilnation

If you want a fighter without a fighter name: Butterbean. I'm not even kidding that's his name, and he definitely didn't look like a fighter... but he was *devastatingly* powerful. Literally just one punch away from a knock-out every time he got within arms length of someone.

Kevin O

Please consider these movies: Old school Pineapple Express Minority report This is 40 Prisoners Kingpin I now pronounce you chick and Larry Sausage party Horrible bosses Wreck it Ralph Gangs of New York American beauty The revenant Shutter island 12 years a slave Wedding singer Hall pass Crash Blades of glory Hot tub Time Machine The internship Hitch Big daddy Saving Silverman

An Inanimate Fucking Object

They did say "rabbit punch"--it's a foul where you punch someone behind the head. Also, Rocky's strategy of taking Clubber's punches and egging him on with "That ain't so bad" is based on what Muhammad Ali did to George Foreman in a fight called the Rumble in the Jungle, one of the most famous fights of all time. Ali was getting old and everyone thought Foreman was invincible and going to destroy him, but Ali (instead of dancing around the ring like he usually did) went up against the ropes and kind of let Foreman swing away at him, tiring himself out while Ali kept whispering in his ear "That's all you've got?" He eventually knocked Foreman out in the eighth round. He called the strategy the "rope-a-dope" Please, please continue watching the series (and sooner rather than later if possible!!!). Rocky 4, though not my favorite, has a cult following, and is a fun watch. Rocky 5 is okay. But Rocky 6 (Rocky Balboa) is excellent and will hit you with all the feels. And then of course all of the Creed movies are exceptional

Khan1001

I haven't watched 5 in ages, yes, there's things that happen that are important for the characters and story so you probably need to sit through it even if you dislike the film and where it goes.

Did Simone mistake Mr. T & Ice T? Very different people...
