I think mutants probably originate in The Time Machine and The Island of Dr Moreau more recently but much older according to David Wengrow as prehistoric chimera as covered in the great little book, The Origins of Monsters.

One of the big differences between D&D monsters and WFRP monsters is that WFRP grunt monsters stay scary much longer, because the character progression is so much shallower. In Boomtown, you were still responding with 'oh shit, beestmen' pretty much up to the point you organised a group of NPCs to fight and defeat a whole warband. I got the kind of mileage out of stock beastmen that CR 1/4 monsters never get.

Yes, that's true. You're very seldom going to be so buff that you don't have to worry about beastmen or skaven or even mutants.
