Even a man whose heart is pure and who says his prayers by night may become a hyena in biomes where hyenas are more common than wolves!

In Somali folklore you do get the Qori-ismaris, the hyena-men, operating in groups in some stories: there's one fable in the book I have where a deputation of them turn up and ask for a human woman's hand in marriage for their eldest son. The father agrees because he's become so frustrated with his daughter asking him when he'll find her a husband, and she then forces the hyena-man to adopt human customs until, fed up with nonsense like chairs and cooked meat, he flees back to the forest - and this is why hyenas run from humans, they're scared we'll force civilisation on their unfettered chaotic lives. There's at least one other story where a qori-ismaris kills a man, eats his flesh, takes on his appearance, then the man's wife has to work out that he's secretly a hyena from his behaviour and ultimately climbs a tree and (successfully) pleads with a bird to get help while the qori-ismaris summons his whole pack and has them yipping about below.
