Catholic churches are still very much like that. We went in several in Brussels last week and each had most of these: many side chapels to different saints, candles for sale (price based on how long they burn), stained glass with the stories from the bible, altar pieces with others, the stations of the cross, the rosary and its devotional mysteries, the confessionals, the crypt, the tombs, the sculptures and massive devotional paintings, icons - several had the Virgin of Vladimir, Russian Orthodox on show(https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=3199), pulpits, baptismal fonts, holy water, ...

Yeah, there's a definite maximalist aesthetic in older Catholic churches; the ones I grew up going to tended to be a little simpler, although they were still pretty busy.
