Gotta love some elemental critters...

So, in a lot of cases, controlling elementals in 2E isn't really as bad as suggested by the monster entry. Depending on what you're using to do the summoning, some options have rules about the elemental being obedient (which, being more specific than the general elemental rule, take precedence in that case). So for example, if you use the Censer of Controlling Air Elementals, you summon an elemental which is obedient until the incense in the censer is extinguished. If you use the level 7 priest spell Conjure Earth Elemental, the elemental specifically thinks you're a friend and obeys you. Same thing with level 6 Conjure Fire Elemental. However, other options ignore this rule, such as the magic items for summoning elementals other than air. Woe unto the caster who uses one of these items without understanding what they're doing.

Yeah, it was the censer that I had in mind. But it seems weird to have these rules in the Monstrous Manual at all -- they're so dangerous that they would only be used in very rare cases.
