I played a charlatan once. Actually a gnome illusionist/thief in whichever was the first version of AD&D to have cantrips. She masqueraded as a cleric which she could do because some cantrips could heal, and even raise the dead for a round. It was pretty good fun. I think we were working to overturn the Evil Empire. You know the one which says it has the Blue Jewel so it's entitled to rule.

A scoundrel impersonating someone much more magical does seem like a lot of fun to play.

An old man in a white robe travelling with seven yellow canaries might be Bahamut and his entourage of gold dragons. Or he might just be a conman banking on the players' knowledge of the Monster Manual. Because they ALWAYS read the Monster Manual.

Although that would be funny, I'm always wary of that kind of escalation with players. I do think that the charlatan can be a good example of the bait-and-switch, because a charlatan is usually *less* dangerous than whoever they're pretending to be.
