I enjoyed the Fiend Factory series you did between seasons. Some of the best WD monsters were presented in themed mini-scenarios in Fiend Factory (there was a “Celtic” themed one with Cauldron-born and water leapers). In the early 20s an April Fool edition had the bonacon (which I think you mentioned in your episode on the tarrasque). If you wanted to complete your classic 1st edition survey, there’s the bestiary in Oriental Adventures. The Kara Tur and Al-Qadim Monstrous appendices are also interesting as D&D tried to encompass non-western cultures more comprehensively. Orientalism is a problem in all three of these, but you have negotiated a way through similarly problematic texts in Patron Deities. You might like to consider the Ravenloft appendix for a Gothic Horror slant. The advantage of the appendices is that they’re short and sweet; the disadvantage is that they’re either tied to a very specific campaign (Dark Sun, Spelljammer) or unimaginative with a few stand out monsters (Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms etc.). If you’re moving away from D&D, the Gateway Bestiary is an interesting document of its time. I look forward to whatever direction you eventually decide to take the podcast in.

Another suggestion might be to go away from DnD/clones completely and look at bestiaries from other classic games like Runequest?

I might very well give the specific settings a look in the future. Al-Qadim in particular could be quite interesting!

I've always been a bit cautious about veering away from classic D&D; as the most widely-known game, it has the widest appeal among listeners. I know that many of my listeners have eclectic tastes and some just like hearing monster talk in general, though, so maybe! I did do a Glorantha episode already, of course.
