Planetars might be useful in a Dogma or Constantine kind of setting. Although the angels in those are probably more LE on the D&D scale. In one of our D&D games, set in an early renaissance Venice, detect good would indicate whether a character was in communion or not. Confession would wipe the slate clean so it was difficult to use it on bad guys with friendly priests. And it would not work at all on creatures who had not been baptised. And now of course we'll soon have Swords of the Serpentine.
